This was someone on the other planet saying that his 08 212x was dropping rpm due to his oil being low, I know it happens when the oil is overfilled but I don't recall hearing this for low oil other than limp mode .
This was not limp mode, just loss of top end speed and r p m. Wondering if anyone else has heard of this.

"Some weeks ago I was having RPM issues between both motors, changed out the plugs and the boat ran just fine....then the issue popped up again a couple weekends ago so I thought I best have it checked. Brought it to my local marine service center and they find the boat is low on oil, for whatever reason...speed forward and they have $210.00 into running checks on it, adding oil and then water testing it. Boat runs great so seems the low oil was / is the problem...lesson learned on checking the oil level more often....I don't mind spending some money on something if I learn more about it."

That's a first for me, too, Jeff. I seem to remember that one time a didn't add back quite enough oil after a change and didn't catch it right away. I never had a loss of speed as a result though. :confused:

That's a new one! Riva always told me to take the oil down to 1/4 or 1/2 way in sea-doo dip stick hash area to increase rpm especially in a stage 2 or 3 kit.

I always run my oil half way between the marks however it never said how low it was. I check mine on the water regularly and change it every 50 hours. I also know not to put in more than I took out so I measure it carefully when removing it. I just wondered about it.

Piston rings going bad? Cylinder walls worn? Spark plugs loose? Bearings going bad without proper oil?
both engines?
I fear a catastrophic failure could be imminent.

Understood , but just adding oil if internal parts were damaged would not correct the problem. For those of you who remember " johnny o" from planet yjb, he had an issue with his oil filter leaking, he called me and said he found his issue and fixed it. The next day he threw a rod through the side of the block on the bad engine.

That reminds me, I have said this many times in the past but for the new people take heed, oil filters develop leaks at the crimp by the base over time especially in salt water use.
The crimp is the seam where it is folded over the base of the filter, I have seen this numerous times especially with boats that do not get oil changes very often due to low usage.
Once the filter leaks out oil you may not notice it until it is too late.
You probably won't even know about it prior to it going into limp mode. Then once in limp mode you certainly will destroy the engine if you continue to run it.
I always cover my filters with aluminum duct tape the metal peel and stick type , what we call poor mans chrome.
That protects the metal of the filter from the elements and from any water in the bilge causing corrosion and failure of the filter. I change my filters 3 or 4 times a year but I still add that tape just to be safe.

Normally if any engine starts running poorly due to low oil there is normally a sicking loud pinging sound coming from the motor that continues to get louder and ends in a POP or BOOM followed by the sounds of hot gases and compression escaping. Can most commonly be accompanied with a OH $HIT ot FU#K!
that's how u have always been able to tell!
