Vacation and Boat/Trailer Security

Has anyone used or know about this? Or something similiar?

Look at Siren Marine's systems; they are designed for boats with lots of features.

Hide an old android or Iphone in your boat overnight and if your boat disappears, track it that way. Take it out in the morning... Voila, you've got a GPS tracker! I've got about 10 older model phones that are capable, I do this with all my toys!

@anmut I don't get it. Not really worried about the trailer when the boat is not on it.

Keep in mind that the ball receiver locks are easily defeated if the crook is prepared to steal a boat. They just arrive with a new hitch and remove your hitch with 4 bolts and bolt on a new one.

I pull my tongue pin and insert a major lock in the pin hole (the hardened round ones).

@Julian something like this?

Yup.

I don’t hear much about boats bring stolen..is that common?

I’d be more worried about someone vandalizing the boat more so than stealing it..

@Brad460 I do not know that statistics on it, but I didn't want to chance my luck with the new boat in an area I haven't been before and on the only vacation away from local lakes we will be doing this year. Would hate for the boat and trailer to get snatched and ruining the family trip. Since we will only be on the boat 2 out of the 5 days, I have to leave it at the rustic resort in the back of the parking lot as we go do other things. I think I have enough prevention with the items listed plus I will throw the GPS movement tracker in the boat.

Plus my youngest daughter is joining us, she is 24, and she will be having surgery in her head to remove a tumor that is causing her some intermittent pain. She will be laid up for a couple of months if not more after it in mid July so this trip was planned so she could relax and enjoy the boat and water since it will most likely be her last time for this season. Wanted to minimize something occurring and spoiling that.

This whole thread makes me wonder, how many boats are stolen? Should I be more concerned than I am? I never locked up my boat at home. At the lake it sits on the lift all week and would take a few minutes to uncover, lower and hotwire it. The trailer sits unlock in a row of other trailers. ...off to look at trailer locks on Amazon and GPS trackers.

@ctyke Perhaps the more experienced long term members could shed some insight on any theft they know of or has occurred to them.

Typically I wouldn't be so concerned, but there are no new Yamaha boats left. When my truck was stolen a few years ago I had a rental and insurance check and new truck within a couple weeks. Even if insurance rapidly pays out on boat I really couldn't get a replacement for a while till the Inventory situation changes. So it could me game over till next season. And with the Virus situation and state of affairs, we would most likely sit around the house for the rest of the summer. Staring at each other. I am not that fond of the Admiral :)

I think one needs to balance.

You can get all tied up buying security devices, drop $1k on them, spend 45 min securing your boat each night, but then doing all of that and the stress probably ruins your vacation anyway. Or you can do nothing, leave the keys in, and make yourself an easy target, in which case probably your vacation gets ruined that way.

Balance: Get your hitch lock, pull your pin, add a lock there, cover it and enjoy your family time. Enough to deter, but not so much that you break the bank and get tied up over it.

IMHO, etc.

@tdonoughue Good Point. With locks, hardened chain, Wheel Lock, GPS tracker, Hitch Lock and PIN Lock I have about $250 into the whole endeavor. Gonna call it good for now.

I would have to agree. I would think a hot boat would be hard to sell for a criminal. It’s not like it a has a outboard on it someone could flip. I guess a chop shop for the motor/s but even then, how many chop shops could/would do that.
Get a couple locks on it, those heavy duty disc ones are probably the toughest to break. Most pad locks are pretty easy to pop if you know what you are doing. Get a cable bike lock and wrap it around the tires if you have a double axle, if not try to park next a street light or post to wrap the lock around trailer/post. Get your truck in front of it at night, that’s probably to most likely time for something to happen. If you got a old phone toss it in there for a piece of mind.

My boat sits in my driveway with the hitch folded back, padlock in the big pin pole with one of the chains wrapped around and attached to pad lock, and one of my Blink cameras on the garage watching it. I’ve also moved across the country several times with my 14ft cargo trailer with motorcycle and non replaceable valuables inside. Parked in many semi sketchy poorly lit hotel parking lots. Never had any issues. Just take some simple steps that you have outlined to not be to easy of a target.

Just do everything you already mentioned and enjoy your vacation. No point in stressing out over it, defeats the purpose of a vacation. If you do half the stuff mentioned in this thread and they still steal it, there was nothing u could have done to stop them. Bottom line is unless they are professionals, they aren't getting it without a lot of effort

Yes, the spot works very well, worth the cost.

If someone steals your boat then it will be abandoned somewhere without the motor. Just lock the trailer tongue and don't worry about it. I would chock the wheels, disconnect from the truck, remove the pin from the swivel tongue and put a lock like linked below ( i use the same one at my yard) . Block the trailer with your truck.

@I_squared_r I like the lock, just ordered it and will return the other one that I have coming. Thanks. Looks solid.

Its a versatile lock. I've used it for my bicycle, my jet ski, motorcycle, and now my boat lol

EDIT: It's a bike lock so there is a rubber sleeve over it to protect the bike's frame. I took a razor and cut off some of it so it fits the swivel tongue.
