In the event you have an over heating situation one of the things you will want to check in the cooling water intake strainer. You can see in this photo where the water enters the strainer inside the pump:
Yam-cooling-strainer.jpg

Here is the parts schematic of where the strainer is located on the pump:

Part numbers 10-14 below are what come off when you remove the 4 bolts holding the strainer on.

You can just see the strainer on the side of the pump in this photo:

Simply undo the 4 bolts, remove the cover plate and pull out the strainer. Clean as needed and replace.

Julian, great writeup. I wish Yamaha would have "real" pictures of their "parts". I am "Parts Schematic" challenged ... I can't translate a "Parts illustration" to the real-world w/out image ladened posts like this. Thank you!

When your check the strainer are the two gaskets sturdy enough so they don't have to be replaced?

Thanks for this Great tip!!! Our lake is filled with weeds which are constantly clogging the pumps, so much so I made a stainless steel hook to pull the weeds from the grate and pump. (I have XL hands and it’s difficult to reach down to the grate) I haven’t noticed any decrease in water from the side exhaust holes but certainly think I need to check the strainers.

Ok on 2nd thought are the torque values on dry bolts or ones with thread lock ? What does Yamaha use for thread lock?

As per the service manual use Locktite # 567. See item #23 below
