I noticed as we were cruising along today there a small surge in rpms. . I thought it was a stick or something.. Engine returned to normal. We were taking some friends back to the boat ramp. We were about a mile away. At the ramp when I started the engine. I smelled strong gas and rough idle. Saw gas in the water.. . Here we go again with the other ecm.

Both ecu had water in them.. And I think the water intrusion came at the same time.. The first one had more water in it.

Totally sucks! Probably a good idea for everyone with this drain layout (going to have to see how mine drains...never studied it) to either take some flashing tape/aluminum/something and put it over the ECMs to ensure that if water does overflow, it doesn't land on the electronics on that wall.

I envision a 3-4 foot strip of stainless steel that could be bolted on above all the electronics on that wall and that it sticks out at an angle like a small roof for them.

Something as simple as duct tape over the top and side seams would prob do it. I think the over all amount of water running into my engine compartment hood was what happened to mine. It was almost a perfect storm. The boat was parked in the worst spot. The roof was bent a little and all the water from the entire roof ran onto my boat at an alarming rate. The port ecu box had a good amount of water amf even had water in the plug of the ecu. The starboard box had a much smaller amount of water but none in the plug. This makes me think if the water intrusion came from the top of the box and ran in through the seal it ran down the outside of the ecu. Maybe yhe ecu its self isn't completely water tight as it appears.

I would like to know if these ECUs can be protected from water intrusion to preempt issues.
For example, getting caught in a storm while out on the water could easily damp as much water into the boat as what happen to yours - when parked in the rain.
Please advise!

Keep in mind.. I was in a florida monsoon and the entire surface area of the roof of the gas station was all running off the roof into one spot... Which ran it off into the back of my boat.. It would be like parking your boat under a small water fall. And it was all concentrated onto the engine hood. Much more water with much more force than just a rain storm... However your point is still valid. Not knowing how much water it takes for intrusion to occur. My circumstances simply was not normal.. It wasn't excessive... It was absurd! Lol

Well, if you are not going to use protection... (on your ECU) I should be okay, too.
But if you do - I would like to know whatcha using!
