I found that on mine I was able to get it to communicate by getting everything hooked up and then just "bumping" the starter for a split second (not even enough that the engine starts to rotate) while the computer was trying to connect. That allowed me to read the engine hours, fault code history etc while sitting in the storage unit.

I decided to try this after I realized that the engine needs to be running to connect but would stay connected after shutdown. I figured there HAD to be a way to connect if the thing wouldn't start - otherwise what good would the diagnostic software be?

So it seems that once you bump the starter, you have a window of a couple of seconds to get connected. Wait too long and it won't connect.

At least on my 2009 it works that way.

Great to know...never tried that....but it makes sense....wouldnt be much use trying to diagnose an engine that wasnt running! I need to update the #YDS instructions now!

Did you set the USB to COM1? Been years since I did it (so don't press me for specific instructions), but I do recall that is a necessary step.

@bronze_10 I assume you are using Windows 10 and the YDS you bought is compatible with Windows 10 and not an earlier version, that said...This is what we did, following the directions from the seller from Latvia or Lithuania or wherever, lol...when you buy the CD you get a read me file and also drivers that updates firmware. Follow the read me step by step. Aka, it says to do one thing first, the COM Port 1 or 2 first. Then it says to update/download driver for YDS. Do that. Obviously you need to be connected to wifi....If you don't do that in sequence, you get a communication error. Then when you are actually at the boat, connect the cord to the engine, bump the engine, then plug it in your SAME usb slot on computer you used....and open the Yamaha YDS program.....also remember to have key in the on position when testing.

@bronze_10 i recently resurrected an old boat anchor laptop with windows xp and successfully read one engine before getting caught in a rain shower. I wrapped up port yesterday.

The trick i found was to reboot the laptop first. Next, connect cable to Ecu, but not to usb.

Start the software and let it start searching.

Bump the starter.

Connect cable to usb.

Only then would the link get established and work for me. It was frustrating and confusing process. Suggest reboot of your pc between port and starboard reads to clear any exclusive locks on usb to com1.

I'll try that. I didn't try the restart. . But when I went to the search tool a window pops up telling u what all to have on and stuff.. Then it go straight yo no communication screen. I'll give your method a try this afternoon..

One other thing I remembered just now is I disabled another device that was on com1. Only the usb to com serial link on com2

I had assigned the other service to com3 but I wasn’t getting connectivity. I think ultimately the sequence is the key.

YDS when it freezes on searching for connectivity, you can unplug the usb and it will unfreeze. This may be because of Windows XP.

Mine yesterday never said searching.. It would go straight to can't connect
See if the connect usb last technique works.

The other thing I was thinking of doing was running the motor for 5-10 sec connected up to see if it worked that way.

After it connects you get the menu down the left side with options 1-8 enabled.

Then I spun thru the injector, fuel pump and other active tests (with motor off) and wrapped up by capturing and saving the engine rpm over time into a file.

You can read that in offline mode by using #7 - some files menu choice.

What version of Windows? If it's anything newer than XP that may be your issue.

I've got an old bomb of a laptop I use for YDS exclusively but I used to run it on a Virtual Machine and that worked fairly decent. (I don't recall if it was vmWarePlayer or Virtual Box. I use them both for odd-ball stuff like this at work and sometimes one works better than the other.)
