Hello, Yamaha 2001 XL800. I get a battery alarm beeping and flashing in the gauges, if i charge the battery then it will not come on for a little bit, but then the alarm comes back sound and flashing. The battery has 12v with ski turned off and also just 12v with ski running.
is it the rectifier/regulator, how do i check before i spend the money and buy it. The fact that the voltage is not increasing when the ski is running tells me that the battery is not charging, am i correct? Is there a fuse that could be blown?

Sounds like the rectifier. Not sure if there is a fuse, but can't hurt to check them all. 12.0 volts is low regardless, 13 is fully charged.

There should be an a/c voltage check across all the wires from the stator. I would google the spec. Once verified good then most likely the regulator/rectifier is at fault.
