Recently I purchased a used 2017 242x. I was excited for the subwoofer and speaker bar. Unfortunately, the sub sounds like doodoo and I think it might be damaged. It is really distorted and I had to decrease the bass almost all the way.

I'm thinking I will probably have to replace it. Anybody replace the installed polk sub and what did you replace with? I read a thread saying it was not so easy but not a lot of details on what they did. Also mentioned that it was through bolts which kind of concerns me in trying to replace it.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah that's the one I read. Trying to understand how I would mount it if it's through bolts.

Take out the cupholders to reach. Sealing that area up and properly powering gets much better response out of the sub. Or go jl free air and add a ring for the added depth. Can certainly through bolt the ring easy and then screw into it.

I didn't replace a subwoofer but did add a Kicker KMF10 10" IB subwoofer (kmf 10inch 4ohm subwoofer) in this location. The mounting depth is shallow enough at 5" that a spacer ring is not needed. I was able to drill new holes though the sub mounting flange and use a Polk DB 10" grill to match the stock Polk DBs currently in the boat. I can't make any comparison between the Polk, Kicker, or JL regarding sound or performance; but I can confirm the Kicker sub fits this space and can use the Polk DB grill with slight modification.
