Lake Travis is a haven for boat-tards who like to see how big of a wake they can send across the lake. Can't believe the size of some of the boats out today and during this season they have the water churned up into white caps regardless of wind on the weekends. Which brings me to my question... more than once I've caught some serious air being cut across by these kind hearted souls. When caught off guard the boat slams down from these deep, wide, wakes and sounds like it's going to break the bottom of the hull. What have your experiences been, and just how much can these boats take?

Something like this?

Ummmmmm, no! But I’m sure it felt that way to the Wife. Having been an avid off-roader to include rally cars, I’d say maybe 3-4’ of air at most. It’s the “flop” mid hull that just sounds bad.

Almost like two panels slapping together.

That sound makes me cringe too. I think we’re just use to old solid fiberglass hulls. Without coming completely out of the water my new trim tabs make a huge difference.

Yes....when any boat "belly flops" it is a loud jarring impact that can scare the crap out of you. It can, albeit rarely, do damage. The most common is the center walk through window either shatters or flips inward. Flips inward? Yup...these hulls flex enough that that window can fall down between a flexed open hull. When I cross to Bimini in rough water, the window is open ideally.

I just wonder from how high can this hull withstand a hard “flop”. I guess I’m used to the boats from my past. In those catching 5-6’ of off shore air resulted in a solid thump. Like closing an old school German car door vs an 80s Japanese.

I hear you. I had a 16’er with a 115 merc and jumped a wake from an oil tanker in Boston Harbor. When I looked over the side there was a big trough 15’ under me. We landed with a slam, broke my back to back lounge seats into pieces, but that boat just kept cruising. I don’t think I’d want to be in my yamaha when that happened.

Yamaha has been made the hulls thineenr and thiner. I doubt a 2020 can handle that. During the 2017 crossing a 242 had cracked hull and was towed back to the US. He was docked next to me and his bugle pump was during every 30 minutes or so.
his handle was “alonte” something. He was the guy who brOught statwskies vbroken tower back the FL

Yeah, the vid @Julian posted was my era boat. The awesomeness.

I pounded it pretty hard to test it out on purpose. Broke my PLB and light on my life jacket but the boat held up, The throttle cable adjustment nuts came loose on one side, and the straps That hold down the platform in front broke. All the crap on the dashboard was on the floor.

Holy smokes! You find one of those paint can shakers big enough for a boat?

Nope 6 to 8 footers less then a mile from a coast guard station, went out to the ocean and gassed it.
