I’m new to the boating world and have been happy with my 2012 ax 190. The only issue I have is the depth finder losses signal on plane. Works fine till it levels out. I am thinking there is an issue of its location as it loses water contact. I have attached a picture of it. Welcome to ideas and others input.

It looks to me like it sits above the lowest part of the hull, so when you get on plane it does not have clean water. That will prevent it from getting information.

I removed the white and blue sticker to the left of your install and mounted a piece of cutting board where the sticker was. I ran a straight edge under the hull and aligned the bottom of the transducer to it. It's a garmin 44cv and I never lose signal at any speed. Good luck!!

@captras and @Gunner are right - you're getting turbulent water off the lower-sitting chines. the reason it works at slower speeds it because the water has time to "backfill" the area between the chine and the sensor, so no bubbles.

...and I think someone sneezed silicone on your sensor. ;)

Could you post a picture of your mounting. Greatly appreciate seeing a set up that will work.

I am still intrigued by those who mounted it flush right on the ride plate. Has anyone done that with a 190/195?

I mounted mine to the plate and am fairly pleased with the results. I am considering adding a quarter inch spacer to see if the results improve. The pics showing about 4mph look pretty good and the one at 30mph has quite a bit of distortion. Full speed looks about the same as 30mph. Any advice?

Sorry for so many pics

Gunner, you have a different hull without the step. The 190 was changed in 2018. I think your install method would not work for the poster either because of the step.

Oh cool, so you have the step then? Does your mount technique get the unit lower than the step to hit clean water?

It does I aligned the transducer with a straight edge to the bottom of the step. Almost never loses signal and on the rare occasion it does it's only for a couple seconds.

I’m getting ready to install a Solix unit in my Fsh. Are you still happy with the placement on the ride plate? Thanks

I do like my location but think it could be better by lowering the transducer. Until I try lowering it I won’t know if 1/4” or 1/2” will be needed. Or for that matter if it can be lowered enough to totally eliminate any degradation. I wish I could find exact specs on the beams origination point and angle. If I had that I would draw it all out on CAD to see exactly where it would need to be placed to insure no interference. I can see an issue with getting it too low. If it were on the transom on a bracket and you hit something it could move and possibly not be destroyed. With mine fixed to the bottom of the boat there is no forgiveness.

Over all I am happy with my location and will try to improve it a little but I would put the transducer back in this same location were I doing it again. The best experiment would be for me to now move mine to the transom to see what that looks like but I am not going to do that work as it does what I need where it is located.
