trolling motor interfering with sonar?

I put a ferrite bead on both transducer cables with no real effect. I saw this on Garmin site so I’ll add to NMEA cables and power cables. Not holding my breath.
Disconnecting ground from nav lights did not help
The extra cable from the transducer leads is in 1’ loops neatly zip tied and laying on top of the reverse actuator boxes in head compartment. Uncoiling them just to see would be major PITA but right now I can think of nothing else.
I have noticed it is interfering with clear-vu as well. Standard sonar thru factory Airmar is the only thing that is really clear with troller on. Very disappointing

Well shoot. I was sure that would clear things up. Like i said before I had MK powerdrive and 2 garmins with live scope all on the same 12v supply and had no interference. Not sure why Garmin shows ferrite beads on power and network cables also. That’s a new on to me
 
Update...

The re-located ferrite bead seems to have done little to nothing to reduce the interference on the sonar.

Below are 2 screen shots from the weekend. I see now that the TM interference seems to affect the traditional sonar and the side view. My solution is to use the clear view which seems to be OK.

I’m with ya. I have 2 things left form the list I got from MinnKota. Add 1more ferrite bead inside the base of the troller. And bond the ground from 2 trollers batteries to the ground of the house battery.
 
So I have a correction. Ferrite beads all over the place have actually helped. The interference now disappears at high trolling motor speeds. About 5 or 5-1/2 the interference goes away. So if I’m headed into the wind and keep speed at 3 mph with higher troller speed I get clear down and side view (!). It all BTSOOM for sure.
 
how many beads, where did you put them, and where did you get them?
 
I put them on every wire attached to both Garmin units as close to unit as possible. The 12inch unit has 2 transducers, Network Cat 5 looking cable, NMEA and power cable. The 9 inch has Network, NMEA and power. I bought this assortment from Amazon. Except for power I looped the wires.

I’m glad that made a difference. I can’t believe it took them on every connection but they are pretty cheap and since it worked, it’s a win!
 
Well I’m not done yet. I think it should work regardless of troller speed. As noted above a couple things yet to try. But yes, progress!

Here's a current photo going in to my garmin. I added 2 ferrite beads this weekend as indicated.

Both my power cable and my transducer cable are coiled - are these coils OK or should I uncoil them?

Any suggestions on adding more ferrite beads? Where would they be effective? I have a whole box of them.

After a quick re read, and I may have missed it, I don’t see where a call was made to either Garmin or Minnkota customer service and a chat with a tech CSR. DID that call(s) ever happen? I have a Humminbird Solix so I’ve only ever talked with Humminbird CSR’s and have found them very helpful.

Was your trolling motor and MFD purchased new?
Who installed these two systems? I’d go back over the installation instructions to make sure everything has been installed correctly.

Since you’ve added a plethora of those RFI beads with no resolution I’d say that is not going to be the answer to your problem.

The fact that when you increase the prop speed and the interference goes away is possibly pointing to your issue. To be clear there is no interference from prop speed 3 all the way up to and including prop speed 10? Could be an issue with the brushes on the armature of the motor. Which trolling motor is it exactly? If it’s a Quest series then there are no brushes but there is a brushless drive system in that motor that emulates AC voltage in a way that could be generating some interference at the lower prop speed.

There is supposed to be shielding on the transducer wire yes? If so is the shielding wire supposed to be grounded? Perhaps either the transducer cable has an issue or the Garmin unit or there is an issue with the trolling motor itself that needs the manufacturer’s attention.

Have those coils been like that the whole time? I’d uncoil those cables next to the mfd and also get them away from the stereo head unit. Coil the cables up some where else and away from each other.

Again, go over the installation instructions thoroughly to make sure there isn’t something simple and call Minnkota customer support, be sure and have the serial number of the troller handy as the CSR tech will want that as well as model information, same thing with the Garmin unit I’d imagine they will want the same information when you call their customer support.

Any chance you’ve got dimmed LED’s going on?

Talked to my marine mechanic about your problem just now and he suggested the following….

Also, make sure the trolling motor power leads are NOT tied to or are in close proximity to the navigation lights wire runs. If so any radiation or noise could be induced into the house bank ground.

If the gps puck and or its wiring for the mfd is anywhere near the the trolling motor power leads this could also be a source of rfi.

Another possible fix would be to wrap the trolling motor power leads with a #14 green (green for ground) wire for the entirety of the length of its run with a relatively tight coil and attach the end closest to the 24V battery to the ground. This will act as an extra shield to capture any radiation coming from the power leads.
