Just a note on the correct propane tank. The manual says to use DOT-39 NRC 228/286 but all I found in Lowes was DOT-39 NRC 232/290. Since it wasn't the same I called Magma to be sure I could use the one I found but they told me it would cause problems with the regulator and to only use DOT-39 NCR 228/286. I believe the Coleman propane tank is the correct one.

Anyone know where to buys these as Lowe's, Home Depot, and Walmart only carry 232/290

@DieselCamel it looks like the small propane tank I use for my torch is the correct one, although it isn't 16 oz, just 14.1 oz. I guess I will have to try it out and hope nothing goes wrong...

It's just crazy to me that the 228/286 is not more readily available..

Funny how this has never come into discussion before.

No one has probably read the directions before. And I'm sure 232/290 will work fine.. I'm almost certainthat's what 98% of the people are using.

I agree glad I saw this I just would have bought a normal tank for camping at Walmart and went at it. @Bruce or @MrMoose where do you get your tanks?

I need to check my tanks. I have a bunch that I bought at SAMs years ago during a power outage and newer ones that I bought at Publix in Fort Lauderdale. I have never checked the specs. Just screwed them on and go.

Ok so the info seems to be hard to find on these but the more I'm searching this seems to be the spec on most portable marine style grills. This makes me wonder if the only real difference is in the way the canister is made. Such is it maybe safer for the environment if dropped in the water or something.

The regulator determines the pressure supplied to the burner. So, any increased pressure may only damage or shorten the lifespan of the regulator. My opinion.

@robert843 You can pick these up at Home Depot or Lowes--they won't be with the grill supplies but more likely with the welding supplies--just ask for propane for a hand-held torch.

Look in the pluming supplies for that gas cylinder, just be sure to get the blue not the yellow. Yellow is MAP gas and burns a hell of a lot hotter.

Do you believe that 4 psi (1.75%) would damage the regulator?

OK...so I went to look at my tanks as I bought them at Home Depot, and i have the 232/290s and used them twice last year with no ill effect....does that mean it won't long term...I have no idea....but so far its worked fine....

Not at all, these ratings are probably government regulatory mandates.

I am not certain of the unit expressed in "228/286 vs 232/290" but the difference is 4 which is 1.75%. So I can not imagine 232/290 being an issue.

We have a Magma Kettle that we have used with camping style canisters for 15+ years. I am sure from the discussion that they have been 232/290, and the regulator is seemingly fine after all that 'incorrect' use. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make a difference, but that is just my uninformed opinion.

I have a cabo and have been using the green Coleman ones without issue.

Surprising I found some 228/286 in my basement.. No clue where I bought.. Sam's club maybe IMG_20160527_191623.jpg IMG_20160527_191643.jpg
