Where did everyone mount their subwoofers? Is under the seats in boxes the best place? Can you hear them without removing a cushion? I'd love to have them out in the open, but that involves cutting large holes in the boat. Something I'm not too excited about.

I went with a infinite baffle sub so no box was required and I cut the hole right in the fiberglass below the passenger seat. I think it sounds pretty good.

If you are going to run no larger than a 10-inch subwoofer, and no more than 250 watts to the subwoofer, then the best route to go is with an infinite baffle JL Audio sub, exactly like the robert843 example. So load up on a Marion's pizza for energy and get to cuttin'.

That iis why I put the sub's in the storage. Didn't want any more permanent holes in the boat. Shakes the whole boat.

If you are asking me.. DB DRIVE A6 2800.1D Okur® A6 Series Monoblock Class D Amp (2,800 Watts)
That's certainly one approach....the bull dozer effect....with two 12s and 2800 watts. Let's not let little inconveniences like fiberglass walls and seating cushions get in the way. Power on through it!!!

I'm sure its not close to that at 12v and overrating of power.

Maybe not. But I still bestow upon thee full 'bull dozer' status.

I almost went a similar path as @DCB-270 originally I was going to use a Orion HCCA 5000.1d amp but I couldn't find any marine rated speakers that could handle it and was nervous to use car speakers and a amp that expensive that wasn't marine rated. Don't get me wrong many people have great success with car audio on boats but living near the coast corrosion was a concern. My little JL 10 running on a JL MXH-300 I'm sure sounds nothing like @DCB-270 sound system. Man that has to thump!

I understand what you are saying. We don't have those issues here. Regular car stuff works good unless you get it wet.

So I went against what everyone said and got two 8 inch subs, LOL. I just want something to enhance the stock speakers when we are at the cove. And I don't want to spend a bunch of money, put a bunch of batteries in the boat, or lose a ton of storage space. The IB subs are really cool, but I'm frugal and once you cut a hole for them, you're stuck with them. I am thinking about putting one sub in the storage compartment under the rear port side seat. All the way back, next to the engine hatch, somewhat near the gas filler hose. And for the other one, I plan on putting it under the starboard bow seat, all the way back against the wall of the helm. I suppose that will be sufficient to satisfy all riders, even if the subs are tiny. For those with subwoofers in boxes in your storage areas, how is the sound when the storage is closed? Do you have to remove a cushion or leave the storage door open to hear anything? I'm hoping I don't even need subs or in-cabin speakers once I mount those Exile XM9s!

I cut the vent holes and still mounted both my JL 10'S in a box.

The wrong way to proceed with subwoofers may be to place them in different locations around the boat. At some perception points they may sum. At other points they may cancel. At some points they will simply smear as they combine. This is one important difference between subs that produce frequencies with long wavelengths and coaxials that produce higher/shorter frequencies.
There is good reason to run larger 10" or 12" subwoofers other than just output level. Larger subwoofers have a lower resonance and a different response curve. Ten 8" subs will play louder but will not play any deeper than a single 8" sub. A good 8" sub in the correct sealed box, can already be rolling off toward the low end at the active crossover point. Also, larger subwoofers are inherently more efficient and require less power to reach a given output level...thereby using less current...thereby using less battery reserves.
You will soon discover that a tower pod speaker produces no bass and that an HLCD is intended to play loud and project at distance, but is exceedingly bright for listening in close proximity. Tower speakers and in-boat speakers have very different applications.
Reading your comments, I'm not sure that being frugal has served you well.
