Exceeding hitch rating

I've been told never tow over 70. Anyone else ever hear that?
Apparently most truckers out there have never heard this. I’ve been passed doing 80 (I wasn’t towing) by tractor trailers. I call the company on every single one of them, one of these asshats actually passed me in the left lane (that was marked no trucks), cut me off ( almost killing the cop in the right lane that he didn’t see), then as he’s being pulled over he flips me off as I go past. I get that most of these guys are professional and generally safe, but I do see a LOT of poor driving out there too.

Don't believe Dodge. the dealer and the people you talk to have no clue. Just ask me I was a truck/towing newbie 8 years ago. they sold me a Ram 1500 and said I could tow anything. 3 years later I needed a 2500 because I was over the payload. Sure I could tow my camper, but couldn't put any cargo or people in the truck without being overweight.

Just remember if towing rating is xxxxx (say 10,000lbs) and on average you need 10% tongue weight (1000lbs) and the max payload is 1400lbs you can only load 400 pounds in your truck between cargo and people (they give you an allowance of 150lbs for the driver!!!!!) Good luck and hopefully don't make the same mistake I made

So someone on the moomba forum said the same thing. Dodge is stupid don't believe the dealer. So I did some research. Well he found a website that if you enter in your vin it gives you the sticker. On our truck it clearly states class IV receiver hitch. Also their is a website that gives all dodge towing specs for 2017. The quad cab with the 3.92 axle towing capacity is over 10k lbs. I also called 3 different dodge dealers. They all were able to confirm by vin that my truck does have the class IV hitch. My payload is 1600 lbs. If it gets weird I can always use my dad's 3500 diesel. Towing capacity a house.

While I do agree that big trucks shouldn't be doing 80 but if you want to see asshats , jump in a big rig and watch what the 4 wheelers do to us. 3 million accident free miles for me

Yeah, this does raise some interesting questions. How can an SUV rate their towing capacity to be 7800lbs (like my Q7 does) and only have a standard Class 3 hitch? This doesn't add up....

Does the owners manual state that a load distributing hitch is required over 5,000 pounds?

That is in many truck owners manuals.

Are LDH compatible with boats?

Some are. But you need to be careful of the breaking hitches (the hitch needs to compress to activate the brakes) and where the load distribution attaches to the trailer to make sure it fits.

It has nothing to do with the 2008 GM hitch.
It's all GM hitches until the finally went to the 2-1/2".
Etrailer.com will hook anyone up with lots a options for good hitches.

I easily bent a ball mount rated at 5000/500 by towing a trailer 8500/750. Just saying. After semi destroying my suburban, I won’t skimp on tow ratings. Everything is overkill for me.

Is that the 4" drop?
I believe so, will double check tomorrow, it is reversible. Also comes with 2' and 2 1/2" ball inserts.

Those are well built. Super sturdy, this is my second season of hard towing. I just spray it with CRC656, looks like new.

will the 2 1/2" ball work to tow our boats?

So that limits it to 8000lbs.
I guess.
But... I wouldn't want to tow anythign close to 8,000lbs on a Shorland'r trailer, lol.
With some mods and lots of maintenance it does really well with my 240, but those are not exactly heavy duty trailers.

I typically sympathize with the truckers, and try to show all the respect.
But the new crop seems a bit different, lot of them are really pushing it. Towing through NM, AZ, TX, speed limit is mostly 75 but if you drive it you get passed and cut off a lot.
