Need a new fuel tank!

@MutherTucker glad to see that you've made progress. Hopefully you'll be back in action soon. Thanks for the pics.

looks like it is coming along. I wonder if your tank has the rubber pads around corners and edges like my LS2000 manual shows. When you do put the tank back in, it might make sense to put some padding on places where the tank could rub. Maybe somone else that has looked at their tank or has a manual for your boat will know whether yours has these pads

See the cushions in the below picture labeled #3. This is the picture for a 2001 LS2000 so yours may not have the pads. It couldn't hurt to use something like these

Thanks for the update and pics @MutherTucker . I'm gonna go throw up now. J/K. That looks like a nice clean cut. So far so good.

I can't wait to hear where it was leaking. Fill that thing with water after you get it out.

Ok ladies and germs, we have an answer! There is a hole in the bucket dear Liza! (Humor is the best medicine)

It is apparent that a fuel sender of the wrong size was installed prior to the one we just replaced! The one we replaced was not long enough to hit bottom. The 3rd sender ago caused a nickle sized dimple that eventually broke a crack in the tank. I'm so relieved to know I didn't cut my boat open in vain!

I ordered a new tank through my local Yamaha dealer of which I have to say, has been extremely timely in responding to my calls and very friendly about the matter. He too, wanted to know what the deal was with my tank! And even though I'm just ordering this part from him, he has treated me as though I were his best customer. If I didn't already have a "guy", I would feel good about sending my boat to this dealer. They are also a jetboatpilot.com certified dealer which is A-Ok in my book.

Now....I wait.......60 day or less lead time......If I'm lucky, I will have that floating turd in the water by Memorial Day.....please pray with me guys! :angelic::nailbiting::watching:

Here are the photos:

Excellent and this is good news knowing that you have identified the cause. Now you will have a brand new tank! Add that to your list of Mods since not a lot of people can say that.

Ha! I will! 2004 AR230 - 2015 Gas Tank

Could the tank be patched?

@MutherTucker glad that you've identified the issue. What a shame. Thanks for posting the pics. This will be a great resource for anybody else in a similar situation. Hopefully the tank will show up soon.

Glad you found the hole, and glad you didn't cut up your boat only to find the tank wasn't the issue!

Could the tank be patched?

I thought about this long and hard. I decided on a new tank for three reasons.

1. I don't EVER want to deal with this issue again.
2. I don't want to have to worry about if the patch is holding up every time I take the boat out.
3. If and when I sell it, I want to be able to tell a prospective buyer that I replaced the tank instead of patching it. It sounds better. And I don't have to worry about another family at risk of danger.

@MutherTucker I am so glad your nightmare is almost over!! Hopefully the tank gets here soon. Hang in there....it's almost over.:winkingthumbsup"

This is a cause for celebration. Glad to hear you found the leak and are able to get repair parts. suspect this is an ease to your stress level. We are happy for you.

Ah, the light at the end of the tunnel is near. I'm glad you found the problem. Just curious... How much did they ding ya for a new tank?

$643. I could have ordered it online from OR, but it would have cost me $100 or more to ship it here and who knows how long that would have taken, plus that parts dealer wasn't willing to do the leg work to expedite the order. So, I gulped and ordered it from my local dealer who seems to give a crap about me getting on the lake before Halloween.

I'm sure the mechanic ordered (or knows where to get locally) a new sending unit that's the correct length and new fuel pump gaskets/seals too, right? I do remember reading in the service manual about making sure to use a sending unit that was shorter than the depth of the tank. It specified the gap (1" or 2") I just can't remember the exact spec. I guess the tank does flex quite a bit.

thats great news! I'm glad you guys found the problem can get it fixed sooner than later. I was getting worried it might eat into a lot of your summer.

Great news that you are on your way to a solid repair. I like your reasons for replacement as opposed to a patch. Good luck getting on the lake.
