We recently put our 2021 255XD in the water but had a couple questions related to the cleanout ports:

1. We put the boat on a boat lift when not in use, should we remove the clean out ports and keep them removed?
2. The clean out ports have been a little difficult to lock after unlocking, any advice?
3. When driving the boat, water has been above the clean out ports, is that normal?

Appreciate any assistance!

my ports are hard to relock after removal also. You shouldnt have water coming back up thru the ports, that would mean they are not sealed and would pull air into the pumps. Make sure its not water from the transom getting in there that you are mistaking.

  1. Yes
  2. You can lubricate them with a rubber safe lubricant like silicon
  3. Yes...normal.
shouldnt they be a positive seal? as any leak would draw air into the pumps?

Not extremely familiar with lubricating something like this, how should we go about doing that?

Yamalube or any silicone based spray works fine. At the end of the weekend (my boat is on a jet dock lift) - I pull the clean-outs - let the water drain through - dry them off and spray them both with a silicone spray and let them sit for a few minutes then I reinstall them so I can close the hatch and put on the cover.

pro tip. you can close the hatch if you lay the plugs on their sides right on the hole.

The attached is from Yamaha for the older style plug....but the same concept still applies.....as they both have the rubber skirt at the bottom. You want that skirt to dry but not to get cracked and brittle. Doesn't need lubricating a lot or often. Dry is the most important part. If you let it sit in the hole, it will 1) swell, and 2) build up mineral deposits as the water evaporates.

The water comes from above the clean out ports and sits on top is what he means, which is normal.

Not sure what you mean, if the water is just sitting on top of the clean out ports from stopping fast and rushing over, water sports etc. than are you referring to the seal on the actual clean out tray. If the water is just sitting on top of the ports than obviously they are sealed well

Was told to not use any lube or spray from our dealer. Should I be afraid to do that?

They only go in one way. Be sure you have everything lined up. I have same problem.

Be happy you got the boat. I’m not happy with some things either.

Dow Corning 111 O Ring lube. I use it on a bunch of auto parts. Seems to work great on the clean out plugs. I still theee after 3 days on the water.

Yamalube spray they plugs. Water on top is normal from water rushing on the transom deck (notice there’s a drain built into that compartment because they know water gets in there). If you’re storing for longer than a week, pull the plugs. Just don’t forget to put them back in!
