Speedling in hospital.....

OK! Update time!
I will go back to this past Wednesday.
On Wednesday I completed the originally prescribed 4 weeks of Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy. They gave me a lot of the same tests they did originally and we compared to see how much improvement I had made etc.
In Physical therapy, I didn't just do squats, I was jumping on the total gym machine. I had a 100lb box that he made me lift onto the counter, then off, spin 180, touch on the ground, then lift back onto counter, repeat 20 times. One of the standard tests they do is to see how fast you can make it from position "A" to position B which are probably 20-25 ft apart. I am sure it's more specific and stuff than that, but I just did it. He just laughed because I actually ran and did it there and back by just reaching down and touching like basketball/football/soccer practice of way back in the day. I wasn't supposed to be able to do that, LOL! So under 3 seconds there and back and I was supposed to beat like 20+ seconds so yeah, I improved! Occupational therapy we did a bunch of brain teasers and grip strength tasks and pinch measurements etc. All good, although she said my grip strength is actually still low to national average for my age which is crazy because as a laborer that used to throw blocks up on scaffolds and shovel mortar, it should be my strong point. Stupid stroke.
The speech therapy we both agreed to schedule some more appointments. I do still have some hearing issues that are frustrating and she is working with some audiology specialists to see what can be done with this. For example, over the phone my brain really jumbles things up and it's hard to hear clearly. Music has actually been deleted from my brain.
If you can imagine not hearing music, and how frustrating that is, well, you would understand that I would agree to keep working on the brain therapy. I also can no longer sing as part of that and I have grown up in a very musical family and should be able to do 4 part harmony etc. not just sing the latest junk on the radio.

THURSDAY I met with the main doctor in charge of the rehab stuff. All was good but I gues I am ever so slightly less sensitive on my left leg yet compared to the right leg. It's better than it was, so it probably will come back. But, my main thing was asking about work. She said she couldn't give me a note because my insurance asked for a workers comprehension exam. Stinks because I am really ready to go do something! I guess it's already scheduled, and I feel ready if it's anything like my therapy. I still will need to take it easy when I go to work but having my uncle as my boss, we have already discussed starting with short days doing easier tasks. I think common sense is a better guidline than what some of the doctors say anyways. But, now my uncle says I need to have a doctors note saying I am medically able to drive. I don't know, no one ever took my drivers liscense but I mean, I can just go get a med card too. It's all about liability at this point.
But doctors frustrated me Thursday too. So, I only have recieved 1 disability check from my insurance. So I obviously call them up and they tell me the doctor filled out the form incorrectly. Seriously.... PHD means nothing sometimes. So I had to run around finding the doctor and getting her to fill it out right and then priority mail the envelope to my insurance. On top of that, I still have this 47,000$ bill on my desk for a helicopter. I call the chopper company up and they have a whole division that deals with insurance stuff and chasing the money. They tell me it's been denied twice and they are in the appeals process. Frustrating but out of my hands.... OR IS IT? I call insurance again, and it turns out that the chopper company has only ever send the standard form in, and never even has called to see what is needed for payout. Guess what it is. A note of medical necessity from the doctor I first saw at the first hospital. Lady on the phone from insurance says there isn't even a standard form for it, it just needs to explain what was necessary and sign it. Fine. I remembered, somehow, his las name, google it, drive to his personal office, talk to secretary, secretary is confused, brings out his medical assistant, and I basically write the whole leter up for him and tell this lady to get him to sign the bottom so I can send it in. Oh, he can't do that because he isn't here today.
Needless to say, they weren't gonna give me his house address, lol!
So, FRIDAY, I am repeating all this to my uncle at the shop at 6:15 AM because well, I wanted to be there for work, and he just kinda laughs at me cuz I'm all worked up. lol he's right, I need to cool it. I am actually one of the most calm people you will meet, but I was a little hot yet from having to tell these doctors how to do things and taking care of stuff that the chopper company could have done by just making a phone call.
So, it rained all day today, but I have a 16" concrete saw, a sledgehammer and a oversized pry bar. Monday, I'm going to start taking apart my driveway where my culvert is along with the concrete on either end. Thursday I also saw planning and commission and they said I can replace the culvert with no permit so I am gonna make that my job until people will let me go to work.
So how am I doing? overall, well. Just really ready to go go go!
Of course, I still need to finish my boat repair, so that should probably be Monday I guess.
I also gutted the front half of the inside of my camper and am looking to redo the floor, walls, some of the cabinets, and I gotta fix the A/C. Maybe it's the stress I put on myself that caused a stroke? ha!

This is great news @Speedling ! Compared to where you were, your problems are small now. (Not to make light of a bill that size but it's easier to deal with when you're getting back to normal.)

Glad to hear you're ready to get back at 'er. (Just don't push too hard. Patience pays off.)

Tomorrow is the "go back to work test" as i call it. I assume if i pass it i am all vlear to work.
One exception is that my boss/uncle says that i need a doctors note clearing me to drive. Not a problem... or so i thought! Got the fingers pointing from doctor to doctor to testing facilities back to doctor. No one wants to sign for me! I think it's because i carry a chauffeurs liscense but in indiana it doesn't require a med card to get it. Stuck on this one but just means i can't drive the work trucks. Especially because they have dot numbers on em!

Is there a medical clearance form for DOT that any doctor can sign? Leave the specialists out and go to a regular doctor for clearance.

There is but my general practitioner says i need the rehab/stroke doctor (same person) to do it because of lae and liability.
Basically, indiana, and probably most states, if any medical professional thinks a patient shouldn't drive then they by law need to report it. Since it was never reported as a medical reason not to drive i technically can drive. I am asking for the cover your butt version now.
My concern is if i get rear ended in the work truck, but they find out i had a stroke, it's law suit time. With a doctors note i am clear.
But on those lines i may pursue a dot medcard and do it that route which may be easier.

Awesome to hear you are on the mend! Getting the bills straightened out will be lots of fun! (NOT)

Passed the work test today but paperwork takes 2 days.

Side note, apparently even though i lost weight, my bp is good, cholesterol slightly high, my bmi says i am obese, lol! Gonna keep working out and watching what i eat. I find fish tacos are a good alternative to burgers. Gotta start somewhere right? Chilis chex mex bowls are better than ribs etc stuff like that makes "healthier" a little easier to swallow, even if it's not a ton better.

Before you go overboard with the diet due to the BMI finding, maybe get the fat% measured on a gym. BMI is sckewed for shorter height and higher muscle mass people. (Not my case, I'm tall and fat !, but I recall many very fit NBA players being obese and overweight according to BMI...which is ridiculous.)

well, i'm like 5'11" and 232 lbs but pretty strong. I could lose 5 lbs more and it wouldn't hurt. I think it showed I needed to be like 180 lbs though, yeah, not happening.

Glad to hear your doing better!
Me too!
I have good days and bad days. Even a day can be mixed. But the bad is usually gone after doing some physical activity. Usually by 1 or 2 in the afternoon i need to be done for the day.

I was reminded that i haven't given an update lately!
I am back to work! I can't do everything and am certainly slower than i was but i am probably working more hours than most of you are awake! Every few days i have therapy which is good to get out of some work. Yesterday i passed my drivers test and that means at my next doctors appointment i get the signature saying i can drive work trucks. This will help because i can sit and get out of the heat. Working to catch up at home too. Camper i just gave up on. Pool keeps having broken equipment. Boat still hasn't gotten touched. Culvert under driveway is still rotted and collapsed. So yeah,i need a lot of sleep but it seems a luxury. Going to actually tell second job boss i can only do every other day to try and catch back up. Don't wanna burn out!

@Speedling, take care of yourself. All these jobs that seem so important pale in comparison to time with family. What matters most is the love, knowledge, experience and memories that we shared with those we love.

Couldn't agree more! I talked to boss number two today and we agreed that I can have a bit more time off. Boss number one is my main boss and the job I get insurance through etc so not messing with that one!
Boss number 3 (my wife!) is probably the most demanding of them all! We hired someone to do interior design of the house and she really really really wants it done like yesterday. There is a little money left to start it off, but I am waiting until the last of the bills are done with insurance stuff.
Especially because I am going to try and get with the Audiology specialist (looking for Audio Processing Disorder, which really doesn't get "cured"). After the 4th of July, my life gets drastically easier. It's also going to be go time for vacations!
I started working on the boat hatch a bit today too, but I need to finish cutting the hole for the table mount, and then put a solid layer of fiberglass on the bottom side to lock everything in nice and strong. I kinda went overkill, but hey, I do masonry, so that's how we do things.
It's killing me that the boat is still sitting in the garage, but no point even asking for help until the hatch is done!

I think you got those backwards. . . . BOSS #1 is ALWAYS the wife. :winkingthumbsup"

Oh man i need to update you guys!
First off i am back to bustin butt which feels great.
Still a ton of paperwork. Always. Helicopter got paid but then they sent me a bill for 1900 even though insurance shows paid 100%. Gotta look into that one.
My gp had me do a heart stress test. If u never have done that let me clue ya in... they inject you with radioactive something scan ya and then run ya on a treadmill till ya hit a target heart rate. Mind you i had to relearn how to walk. The doc watching me had said i had to hit 154 bpm. I hit it quickly and doc was like dude, you ain't even panting, go another minute, rinse and repeat, i hit 200 bpm and i said i was done, lol!
In any case i guess my heart is very healthy, lol!
That doc still wants to put in a loop recorder for 30 or more days but i am kinda calling bs at this point after having a heart monitor for 2 months.
Auditory Processing Disorder makes life interesting. I have a few issues there. I could write book actually.
Learning a lot of differences of left vs right hemisphere in the brain. Right is my side the stroke effected which is why my left side went numb. Also, it is artistic, emotions, patterns, action responses and music. All those things on the list are really screwed up. Can't plumb or level things without a level. I don't process music to the point where i can no longer sing and i turn on talk radio. Patterns also is things like engine speed from hearing the repititions i can't hear if i am hitting the gas or even in gear. Action response is stuff like after getting a haircut and she washes your hair and she says ok" meaning, lets go back to the chair, but instead i just sit there like nothing happened. Just a bit embarrassing. My apd doctor has a bunch of stuff we are working on. Mostly via phone calls switch back and forth on ears because at my testing my left ear showed it was only 3% capa ity not due to the hardware, but due to the connection to the brain.
Ok, enough! If anyone wants to know more, ask, but for now i thank God for what he has done!
Ps emotions are not fun. Anyone that has had actual depression i can now sympathize with! Thankfully i am past most of that and can tell u my wife and kids help out there a ton!

Everything you just listed above sounds perfectly normal to me. I cannot plumb or level anything without a level of some type, at least that is what the wife tells me, I only listen to talk radio, unless i am in the boat, I could easily fall asleep in the chair getting my hair washed, one of the reasons we have a cheap clipper/comb set and I do my own. You are definatly getting better. Keep up the progress, you are sounding good to me.

Hang in there Speedling. Your doing great. Will be great to see you again at Shelbyville.
