Sayings that have served you well

In answering another thread I thought of a saying that has served me well over the years. I was just wondering if any of you have had something similar that you wouldn't mind sharing.

"you never make a worse decision by waiting"

I don't know who was the original person to say this, but I have yet to come into a situation where this hasn't applied.

I don’t know if these saying have served me well but they have proven to be true at least where I was concerned:

1. No good deed goes unpunished.
2. The reward for good work is more work.
3. Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.

I think I heard it in a Jay-Z song years ago. Kinda stuck with me.

That one is second only to "Be Prepared". Coming from divorced parents with a whak-a-doo joint custody arrangement, to spending over a decade in the Boy Scouts, to living on my own at 16.......those two simple words have helped me overcome more than I care to admit, and have fostered a paradigm of self sufficiency that still sticks with me.

Don't believe me, just ask my neighbors how much stuff I brought with us on vacation last year (it was a LOT), and how many "Oh crap I forgot something" runs I had to make (Zero).

There are so many, a couple that come to mind:

* "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best" -- This is kind of my mantra when prepping to go out on the boat.

* "The harder you practice, the luckier you get" -- Allegedly said by a famous golfer about making a "lucky" shot. It's stuck with me because after working my ass off through college, internships, and grad school--the entire time laser-focused on working in my industry--a relative told me I was "so lucky" to get the job I eventually landed. MAN I was angry, felt like she was reducing the result of all that effort to just chance.

We all have our have our preferences and can't imagine buying something that someone else loves, or insisting on Yeti vs. some other cooler, or Ford vs. Chevy, or back in the day someone's choice of wife/girlfriend. My dad once told me for all the above..."Son, there is a butt for every seat". I've taken it to mean over the years that it's really none of my business what someone else does and they can do what they want to make themselves happy.
