Back to the future: considering a mint 2009 232 Limited S vs a new 2016 AR240 - am I crazy?

Buy the 232 for 25K and call it a day.

If I was in your shoes I would be torn too. But I would take the older one and enjoy the 20-25k extra and drop 5k on upgrades and professional clean and wax inside and out do the cables and be happy. But I am very tempted by the new ones so I know it is a hard decision. Just know either way you will have a great boat one way or another.

This one is tower less but, I think it hits all the marks!

I also found out today, although have no way of verifying it, the timing chain part was replaced in all 1.8l engines produced after 07/15. So, for example, a boat made in 10/15 would have the new part. Not sure how important that is in N/A (not supercharged) engines, I don't think anyone knows at this point. The information is not first hand, but from a completely reliable source.

I have seen at least one post on here about a failed timing chain on a 2015+ boat.

Thanks @Zarrella. Looks nice, but it is a FL boat and the other one in VA is mint by comparison, at least in pictures. Extremely low hours too, per owner, and fresh water use only. The only items giving me pause is wet slipping and no use the last two years. Most likely fine, but...

I would not worry about the wet slipping if the boat never sank, his ad says he waxed the hull yearly - two years of no use, just change the oil, spark plugs, fresh fuel and you are good to go.

I will have to go back and look but I think it was a 192 I do vaguely recall it but it is a known issue on the super charged engines.

If the boat is in great condition inside and out, what is the concern regarding it having been wet slipped in the summers?

Nothing alarming really, but I would personally never wet slip a jet boat. There is just too much water intrusion into the pumps and exhaust. Cables and seals that will get degraded a lot faster when submerged, that kind of thing.

There is also quite a bit of wood built into fiberglass (to support various bilge fittings), really poorly sealed. That's in spite of Yamaha advertising claims of no wood in hull or transom construction...
And then there is the quality of sealant and through hull fittings I worry about. I have the impression that while Yamaha uses robots to fabricate these high tech hulls, they use pre-schoolers to do all the fiberglass drilling and finishing.

It is both, I will pull it up later.

Found them thanks! Something that is surprising to me now that I have looked as well is the amount of Blown MR-1 motors listed on the other site and the issues involved in those boats that are common as well. Stuck injector/ ECU failing, valves out of adjusment and blowing motors and stuck spark plug would appear to be common issues on those engines based on the threads I saw there and green hulk. It looks like there are things to look for either way you go. If you go with the 09 you could always up grade later to a new boat it would be a lot tougher going the other way.

Don't over think it in regards to what
" might" go wrong. Go buy the boat that most excites you!:winkingthumbsup"

I upgraded and love the new ride....on wednesday evening I was on the lake and was going pretty fast and came up to a big wake thrown by a boat that was wake surfing.....I braced for impact and there was none! That said, the 24' boats aren't as maneuverable as my old 230...but that is what happens when you add a lot of weight, a foot, and a keel.

But LOVE the hinged seats, the drive by wire throttles, having tons of storage, the hinged wake board racks, the tower, the stereo, the launch controls and speed control, the lower swim deck on the stern, the cushions on the stern, the solar panels, the push button starts, the stereo (even not fully working yet!), the huge bow space, wife loves the dual captains chairs, the extra room, the wave handling, the nice carpet, the super nice seat materials, the chrome flip up gas cap, the bow boarding ladder (for climbing in from the trailer)....

What I don't like.....the black parts of the seats (gets hot), my wife doesnt like the headrests, I miss the mini-sub moves I used to do.....

But I'm also enjoying making this new boat my own....

Not an easy choice @swatski

@Julian if you had it to do all over would you go back to the old boat?

@Julian if you had it to do all over would you go back to the old boat?

The only thing tempting in that move is the driving style of the old boat. But there are simply way to many conveniences in the new boat for me to ever go back! I love being able to wakeboard and have the launch be exactly the same every time, have somewhere to put boards out of the way, somewhere to store the grill etc etc.

And the freeboard on the new one is so much higher....so bimini is in my future!

I would like to say: MANY, MANY thanks to all who kindly offered their thoughts and advice, I appreciate it tremendously! This is an an amazing forum.

Kate (wife) and I just wrapped up another lengthy discussion based, at least in a large part, on the information here. Tomorrow promises to be a busy day, I think we know what to do...
