Push Button Start Mod - It works! With video and full instructions

I am not familiar with the scarab that you have. I thought it already has push button start? The answer to your question depends entirely on the current wiring and components of your boat.

It's a 2016 so the push button was an option. I was a car stereo/alarm installer so I'm very familiar with wiring and diagrams...but out of date on all the new "digital" relays and so, in order to do the ON/OFF via low-level signals.

It really will depend on your wiring. If you have a twin engine then likely very much like my diagram if only one engine then delete one start and one stop relay. If you are looking for single button start/stop then you will need a logic controller or complicated latching setup with a reset switch in case of a failure to start. I really like the programmable timer relays for their simplicity of wiring and multitude of functions. I bet you will figure it out once you figure out what your ignition wires do.

i was just curious since you posted a link to a new timer/relay...I thought maybe you had some new experience with that new one to do the ON/OFF via one button....anyway, you have given me a new project! LOL

Ahh the new one is the same as the other. Basically that same board along with a bunch of others are mass produced in China and then a bunch of companies sell them. Sainsmart has better documentation than most and the documentation is usually available on their website.

That's pretty cool...

Possible mod coming up.

/spaz1868.
Did you use the existing keys holes and if you did what push buttons did you use.

I want to give big thanks to spaz1868. He was more help than I could ever ask for. He helped me with my push start mod. My set up is similar to his, 1 push button for each engine, only one key needed for both engines, relocated the key cylinder to the starboard "phone holder." The man even had me soldering, took a bit of practice but I feel like I did a decent job. The only difference is that I didn't wire a third push button to shut off the engines, I bought one but couldn't find it till after I was done. I use the key to shut off both engines simultaneously. The only other thing that I had to do differently is that the 22mm push buttons didn't fit on the key cylinder holes, I had to grind the holes down a bit, again, thanks spaz1868.

Nicely done @Av8tor07 ...your dash is a carbon copy of mine.

@Mainah, just finished up the install and its amazing! I got everything wired up and installed relatively easy. Only had one issue. When I went to do the key test the starboard engine wouldn't turn over. I checked all connections and found that the solder broke on the key side of the harness for the brown wire. Fixed the connection and everything works as advertised. I will say that the red button doesn't look very good in the sun, not sure if the one I used is bad or just subpar quality. Thanks for answering all the questions and I can't wait to show you in person soon.

Is there any problem after doing this mod in leaving the keys in the run position all day such as when you are anchored for a couple hours listening to the stereo? Thanks!

That is part of the reason to do this. I was out on the boat for about 5 hours yesterday and left the keys in the run position the entire time. Radio never had to cut out because push button stop prevents that issue and only had to hear the start up warning beep once which is also lessened by the shrill to chill mod.

Just finished the Mod and it works great! The only downfall is I get a loud "pop" through my speakers when I push my red kill button, Any time I push it it pops whether the engines are running or not. The pop only goes away if I turn the stereo volume all the way down. Any ideas? Thanks!

Loose connection somewhere...?

When you press the kill button in the set up it it the same as pulling the lanyard in the it is a ground ignition kill of the engine. Pressing the red button for less time will lessen the pop but it sounds like yours is quite pronounced. Making sure your amps remote turn on are connected to the blue head unit wire instead of switched power will help ensure this is not an issue. Loose or partly jumped connections could also be a culprit.

I do have my amps wired to the blue head unit wire already, I will double check all my connections and see if I can find the culprit! Thanks for the tips everybody!

Really weird, I went through and soldered all connections except the wires that hook up to the key switches where I used T tap connectors. I triple checked the crimps and all looks good. I used cheap relays from amazon, could that be the problem? stumped!

I am doing this. Just ordering parts now. Are there any updates that I should be aware of?

@Huntersales seems to have had issues. Perhaps it is the cheap relays. I do recommend solid stae isolated relays for the stop side as a upgrade to the bosch style ones.
