Raw water intake blockage

Have you had a chance to test the engine with the hole plugged yet to see if the engine still alarms?

This thread resulted in no issue with the engine...was low water pressure:

I did not have a chance to try that @Julian. I was sort of in a rush to get the boat cleaned up and put away as we were flying back home the next day.

The only other small oddity I noticed was that several days before the overheat the port engine did not pee in the water at idle. As soon as you idled up to no wake speed (about 2300 RPM), water would exit the port normally. I was thinking that perhaps the strainer did not dislodge all at once...Maybe two of the bolts failed initially, allowing the strainer to become partially unseated and not allowing proper pressurization of the intake water at lower speeds.

After reading those two links you provided, I'm becoming a little concerned about a bad thermostat....then I checked the price of a replacement....$77 dollars!!! Yikes.
 
dollars to donuts once you replace the strainer it will work fine again, definitely replace the other bolts since we've never seen anything crazy like this before,

I also doubt you have any long term damage because of the overheat (that's why the ecu limits it)

I wouldn't let it worry me at this point,

The only other item that comes to mind for me would be if you had beached the boat or run in very shallow water an ingested sand. This might clog the cooling intakes and have caused your early overheat, and COULD have caused a much higher than normal pressure in the intake manifold...POSSIBLY causing the bolt failure. But just not sure it could build up that kind of pressure....so perhaps a combination of things...fatigued bolts (over tightened or rusted) and a blockage?

Time will tell....I'd use a laser heat sensor to read the engine temps next time you fire her up to see if there are any hot spots.
 
I would buy new zincs, too... Yes, those are pretty pitted, but they also looked covered to me. I do fresh water only (and not many hours), but I thought you are supposed to wire brush goo off of those? At any rate, the white stuff on there could be decreasing their effectiveness.

Ok guys. Just wanted to give you the final update on my overheating issue.

After replacing the missing strainer and backing plate assembly, the engine works perfectly with no overheating. I get a good stream of water now even at idle.

I ordered four extra bolts to replace the one on the starboard motor as well. Those bolts came out easily and show now signs of corrosion. So basically I still have no idea how all four bolts failed on the port.

Any way....thanks so much for all the help! I was ready to throw in the towel on this boating thing when the dealership told me I needed to pull the engine. Glad I listened to you and not them! Have a great and safe Memorial Day weekend!
