SO, I called it a day and went to apply the first coat of satin polyurethane over 3 coats of epoxy on the dock steps. I added Epifanes Brushthinner to the mix for this project and boy did it make a difference. Much silkier than hardware store thinner. I am hooked on this stuff now.

@zipper How is the Epifanes on outdoor stuff, as far as upkeep?

We've got a bench that I want to keep outdoors. It's a sentimental gift to remember my Father-in-law by, that was finished and given to us by a neighbor. I'm not sure what he used for a finish - seems to be standard poly or perhaps spar varnish. It's been 2 years, and it's already blistered and peeling. I'm going to pull the wood off and sand it back to bare wood. My plan was to go with Marine Waterlox, as it seems pretty easy to keep up with, and I won't need to strip it every few years if I simply clean it off and add another coat or two every year. I've dealt with Waterlox before, which is why I was gonna go that route. To me, it's no more or less spendy than the Epifanes if it works out, but if the Epifanes would hold up better, I'd consider a change in my plans.

Epifanes is made for outdoors, boats, etc. above the waterline for this particular product. From past experience, to keep the Epifanes from reacting with the existing finish, you know what I mean, I would prep, sand to bare wood if desired and then use West Systems Epoxy, 105/207, build up 3 coats, let harden and then sand, with an orbital sander, 400 paper to smooth or your desired texture. The epoxy will give you a clean slate with no reactions later. Then I would apply the Epifanes over the epoxy. The epoxy makes it waterproof if you seal all surfaces and the wood will remain stable in all weather conditions. A tip on the Epifanes...I used satin, gloss is available. Buy the Epifanes brush thinner. I mix 5% brush thinner in the 2 part Epifanes. It makes a big difference in the final finish. Apply at least 2 coats of Epifanes and sand lightly between coats by hand. I put 3 coats on the Steps because they get wallked on. After the last coat, wet sand with 3-m 2000 w/d and then polish with 4/0 steel wool.

Ask away for any more details I may have missed. As far as upkeep...I installed the first wood on the boat one year ago using this method and I have not had to touch it up yet even under foot.

I order from here and get the next day without paying extra shipping. Wood Finish & Restoration Best deal I could find. Don't pay $99 @ West Marine.

Edit: When we first got the boat, I applied a few coats of Minwax Spar polyurethane on the cockpit table, 29yo weathered teak sanded. In the first season I could see moisture ingress at the joints after a couple of downpours. I removed the table last year and covered over the Minwax with epoxy and then Epifanes and has been great since.

400 lbs. I see where you're going! Who needs ballasts when I have them. Right?
Except good luck trying to keep them in one place or the place you want them... lol!

Plenty to complain about over the past week and a half with work... at least work came with a view. I'd rather be out boating on it than staring at it from a distance.

We strongly discourage them from going back there when the boat is moving. I have a door which slides in here to block the path to the swim platform. This is always in when we're underway.

A long hot 90° Spring day in the tractor seat today. Got the baling done a day ahead of schedule.

Finished at 2:30 and now I am day drinking on the deck by the pool...

watching the dogs train to the pool noodle ramp in the pool. Will use it once confident on the Yamaha in 3-4' of water.

Got a chance to meet up with fellow jetboater @kyle while he was in town today (Destin).

Jealous! I spent a good majority of my lunch debating skipping out on work early and heading out to Crab Island, definitely going be out there Saturday, been a great week down here for boating, water has clearing up nicely, ocean was a little murky until a few days ago from that tropical storm

I bought a blue tooth speaker for one of my waverunners a few weeks ago, I’ve used it on the water once so far. The second unit was delivered today, two weeks early. They are water resistant and float. It’s great option for anyone that wants tunes on their pwc. Looking forward to riding this Father’s Day with my Son. The second speaker is for his ski (or I could put it on mine, jk).

I saw this come across my FB news feed. I had no idea this sign existed, I think it is new. I know exactly where it is though, in front of the Marina on the Burlington Waterfront. Pretty cool tidbit of Hockey History.

I watched this Anvil cloud form over Upstate New York from the Marina for about an hour until Sunset tonight.

Appology for the timelapse of pictures, I thought how that cloud came and went was pretty cool.

Decided to "customize" my finger with a razor knife while on the job today. It's the first time I've ever had blood actually spurt from a wound...

I stopped by the pharmacy because I'm determined not to let it ruin my weekend boating plans.

I thought you just bought a new cover, maybe I am mistaken. Looks like the gate has always been a problem. I know you only have about an inch and a half on each side, but I would find a piece of plywood or starboard to put over that steel frame.

The cover I ripped /reripped is one I bought used a few years ago. I use it as my storage cover And have added vented pole mount to to it. I will just patch it again before the off season. The patches I added previously have faded to gray and are a reminder that it wasn’t the first time and probably won’t be the last.

@zipper, I thought about coveringene steel frame but don’t want to make it thicker. I may just Try to grind down the rough / sharp edges. Im using the new / used cover I got last season now and will do so for the rest of the summer as I shouldn’t be putting the boat behind the fence until this season is over around the end of September.
