Whats your tow vehicle and what is your average towing MPG?

Depends on the speed! 2018 Audi Q7

60mph....12.5mpg
70mph.....10.5mpg

Old 2011 Audi Q7 TDI

60 mph.....16.5mpg
70 mph.....13.8mph

Miss the diesel

Ford Expedition Max (with HD tow package)
60-65mph. 12.5-13.5mpg
70-73mph 11.5-12mpg

You can actually vary more - especially out here in the west United States we are going up to 4000 foot climbs or more.

Still, the new Ford expedition max tows worlds apart better than our 2012 suburban - nice vehicle but struggled in the steep long climbs)

2015 f150 with 2.7 eco boost. If I keep it below 70 it gets 14-15. You start pushing it above 70 I’ve got it down to 10. It’s still pulls better then my 13 ram with hemi or my 12 Sierra with 5.3

With my ‘06 Ram 3500 with 5.9 liter Cummins -
58-62 mph - 22-23 mpg’s
63+ mph - it’s in the toilet >15 mpg’s

With my ‘16 Suburban -
Speed doesn’t matter it’s 10-12 mpg’s

I love my Ram...185k miles on it and it’s still a beast. Dodge makes a turd, the truck is falling apart around the engine but that 5.9 Cummins just keeps purring.

@dzeppos do you have the Ecoboost ? I have 2016 F150 with 5.0 V8 and I get about 1mpg less.

The other thing to consider is the aerodynamics. For example, the tower does not help AT ALL. As an example, I get the same mpg pulling my sx240 covered as I get pulling a AR190 with tower up and uncovered.

The smaller the engine is the greater the drag. Recently I pulled my Jetski with AR tower strapped on it and my MPG dropped about 25% as when without that tower strapped. Please note that this was a Prius; hence, the small engine example.

Yes. All 2018 expeditions and newer have the ecoboost v6 and 10 speed autos. The amount of torque is incredible- and 10sp transmission always finds the right gear. But yes - if you go faster above 65-70- fuel economy gets exponentially worse

2018 Ford F-150 5.0 - 70 mph ~11 mpg

2015 Sierra 5.3L/6spd towing a covered 2017 AR190.

55-60 back roads towing ~14-15mpg
65-75 Interstate towing ~12-13mpg

Mileage is hand calculated with miles driven divided gallons filled. Instrument panel is typically about 5-7% optimistic compared to hand calcs.

@2kwik4u you are right. The vehicle mpg is always optimistic. As matter of fact on my Prius it is more like 10%. Kind of ridiculous in a vehicle that is all about MPG efficiency

Add me with @Julian. We tow with a Q7 and get similar numbers (including with the prior TDI, which we also miss).

When we pay attention. Which we usually don't. :)

2007 GMC 3500 Duramax Dually.

14.5 mpg empty. Speed does not seem to have much effect.
13.5 mpg towing the boat 242X.
10 mpg when towing heavy stuff.

2018 F150 5.0-2018 210 FSH sport

60-65 mph 12-13 MPG
70-75 mph 10-11 MPG

11-13ish, F150/3.5EB

I am curious if the guys getting higher MPG still have factory tires on the trailer? I feel a lot of resistance comes from crap tires on mine.

2019 Ram 1500 Hemi with 800 miles on it (I am told it has a ~4000 or so break in period where it will run a bit richer?! ...idk)

We just did 216 miles in 3.5 hours = 11.2 MPG pulling Yamaha AR210. We were fairly loaded with bikes and other crap.

2010 Ford F-150 FX2 with 5.4L (199k miles on it) and 22" wheels (they rob me of 3-4 MPG vs stock 18" wheels).
Without load 14-16 MPG
With Yamaha AR192 10-12 MPG towing in speeds less than 70 MPH.
With Moomba Max 8-10 MPG towing in speeds less than 65 MPH.

2010 Nissan Pathfinder V6 4WD with Yamaha AR192.. 80% of its use is for towing in city. I estimate 12mpg.

2016 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi. Slight variance depending on how much gas in the boat and the truck. full on both, 9 mpg. about half on both 10.5.

Beefier Durtrac tires on the Ram and upgraded radials on the trailer.
