The bottom line from both is the US still hasn't got a plan on what to do with its spent fuel/nuclear waste.
"In 1987 Congress passed legislation that required the Department of Energy (DoE) to take possession of and properly store the spent fuel from the nation's 104 nuclear reactors by the then far-off date of February 1998"
Pretty stunning that we realized in 1987 that we needed a plan, and now 35 years later we've missed every deadline and still don't have a plan or even a location chosen.

That's not entirely true. We built a storage facility thats deep in a mountain in Nevada, in the literal middle of nowhere where nothing can go wrong with it, set it up, and then a few dumbass congress people decided to kill it after we spent hundreds of millions on it.
Unfortunately, congress people care more about their reflections and sound bites than they do about actually doing good things.

secretary of energy convened the bipartisan Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future to devise a new strategy. The commission issued a report in January 2012. “The overall record of the U.S. nuclear waste program has been one of broken promises and unmet commitments,” the report stated.
This is true.
Just because Nevada said they didn't want the rest of the countries nuclear waste....is well within the purview of State's rights. I'd be delighted to make Nevada the dumping ground for all of it! But get why we can't force that on them given their right to say "screw you-we ain't taking it" (amusingly the legislation proposing the site in Nevada was referred to as "Screw Nevada" by residents there).

What wasn't true is not having a plan. We had a plan... People just ruined it. At the end of the day, we do have to have something to do with it and that was just about the safest thing anyone could come up with. It's also far safer than the alternative, what we are doing now.
Also regarding places not wanting toxic waste dumped there and having a right to say no to it... Florida has been trying that with NYC and New Jersey for years with no luck... Lolz.
