Who took down the videos? YouTube or Cobrajet?

Without having seen them and knowing how much of the @Foobar video was used (and the manner in which it was used) I’m going to withold judgment in eager anticipation of Jeff’s response.

Fair use doctrine could potentially apply here.

Yeah I doubt there was anything illegal about this. Just kinda a dick thing to do as has been said. And I really don't see any need to try and smear the JBP products, again not illegal or anything but let your product stand on its own - why be a dick about it.

I saw @Foobar video and I saw the the VIDEO in question also......
He used foobar entire video but chopped and edit geared towards his product
He did not film anything himself, but he did add text to the video
It's a shame, that was the best quality video on his channel :arghh:

I kind of agree. This is a head-scratcher... I saw one of the two clips before it was deleted.
(Both were promptly taken down upon @Foobar's flag/notice/objection.)
Re-posting videos without permission is something that most of us have done in the public domain. However, editing, blurring faces, obscuring credits - that's different. It pisses me off just as much as anyone else here what the hell is going on with all the heated fin rhetoric. I do wish unethical advertising and behavior could be avoided.

As far as the fins are concerned however, JBP fins may work great in many situations, fishing, currents etc. For water sports and control at speed - that's Cobra territory. I guess I am with the "don't throw the baby out with the bath water" camp.

Who knew boating forums would have so much drama.

Interesting. I haven't been on here in awhile, mostly because I got a new motorhome and I'm DEEP into projects on it! (lol. My usual stuff, like taking a sawzall to the basic structure of the interior. haha.)

Anyway, the other reason I haven't been around is I got sick of seeing constant posts about cobra fins. I understand and appreciate when vendors or members try to come up with products and sell them in the forums. But it can be overdone. I don't like it when every single post from those vendors is simply trying to push their products. Be a member FIRST and a vendor SECOND.

In light of this thread, I'm going to copy and paste an interaction that left a very bad taste in my mouth about sharing my knowledge on this site. I kind of blew it off since little insecure people like this don't really deserve my time, but it did make me a little less interested in sharing what I learn and discover on this site.

This is a PM I received from Jeff after I posted a picture in a thread that showed some fins I made for my own boat...
From Jeff...

I hate to say this but I already own the patents for the fins as you know and the fangs being built in is in my patent application also so please do not post this stuff on here and please do not use any of your fin parts I know you purchased my steering but my lawyer insists I protect my patents I am worried others will do this if I do act on it immediately. you can search the patent office I was granted a provisional patent on all the new design and then applied for a regular patent this year for that and a lot more. I know you will understand and I appreciate your cooperation.

My response...

I'm not trying to sell anything. I simply didn't like the design so I made my own. I can make and use any patented product on my own personal property and if I don't like a part of it, I can choose to not use it and replace it with something that works better. That's the whole premise of "modding" anything. The shape of the plate I made came out of my own head, and the basic premise of putting fins on jets or outdrives is nothing new. My dad and I made a similar mod to a boat with a Berkeley jet about 40 years ago, basically a rudder attached to the turning part of the nozzle. If I find a picture of what we made can I say we came up with the idea first? lol.
Again, I'm not trying to make a profit on anything here, I simply share ideas. Sorry if you took it as stepping on your toes or infringing on your patent. I will keep and use what I made on my boat. If the pictures are a huge problem for you, I guess I can remove them but that only hurts the forum and it's members. I'm just trying to help others, not make money off of them.

John

His final reply in the PM thread, I never responded again to him...

ok I did not want to make a big deal out of this I did not want you encouraging others to break the patent laws when it pertains to my patents I am sure you can understand.
I want to explain the law you can not sell ,offer for sale, or "USE" an infringing item.
Now personally I did not worry about your propensity to mod things I do not make those fins that size for a reason, but if you would do me a favor and make the statement that I gave you permission this one time to play with some mods to my fins It would make me happy and cover me. I honestly believe you will soon discover why I do not make the fins like that The entire point in this is to protect my investment on all my patents and protect my livelihood, telling or encouraging people to build infringing items is obviously not helping anyone.

The part that really bothered me is that he wanted me to lie online for him when he said this...

"if you would do me a favor and make the statement that I gave you permission this one time to play with some mods to my fins It would make me happy"

Are you f'ing kidding? I don't lie, and I certainly don't lie when somebody tells me to. At that point I realized what kind of person I was dealing with and dropped it. I did NOT post anything like he wanted me to about him giving me permission to mod my boat. It simply nudged me away from contributing here, which I believe hurts everyone.

Just thought I'd share my personal experience with this particular vendor. And btw, the fins I made work WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY better and I didn't "soon discover why he didn't make fins like that". lol.

Jeff is a good guy, a little crass at times and kind-of-a old redneck but a good guy. He is not to tech savvy as you can tell by his website. That being said he knows his $h1t and I like his product. @Foobar you were a little condescending in your replies and Jeff being Jeff responded.
CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!!! AGREE TO DISAGREE AND MOVE ON!! Just saying :jimlad::jimlad::jimlad::jimlad:[flag][flag][flag]

I’ve wondered why people haven’t been poasting about making there own fins...seems pretty easy.

You should file a provisional patent on the shape of your fins if they work better

I'll do the video testing.

Wait... :shifty:

Who knew boating forums would have so much drama.
Just need it to warm up enough to go boating instead of sitting on shore and bitching.

Guys, I don’t see how this post has any value and just serves to cause more drama. If you have a problem with something someone has done you deal directly with that person first. You don’t put them on blast on a public forum. It doesn’t matter who they are.

Just my 2 cents.

Yea fins never existing on jet pumps before a Yamaha boats came along. Never mind reverse buckets either :D

Probably some loose/gray language used around the terms of how the fins are attached to the housing/or nozzle..but the concept itself is not new. In the "real" jet boast (V8) world they call these rudders even though they attach to the housing and swivel with the nozzle just like "fins" do. Tomato tomato IMHO but YMMV.

Gentlemen, this is how I hope this is going to end up.

There will inevitably be two camps when it comes to steering mods. I enjoy a good review of products. (I am currently watching reviews on coolers now). The thrust vector camp can enjoy thrust vectors and the cobra camp can enjoy cobras. What I dont want to see is this forum degrade into to separate sides. This is the best forum on the Internet because we MOSTLY get along and everyone has something they can contribute. My hope is everyone has their say and we can let this topic go before more feelings get involved and people get angry and rage quit the forum. When people take their knowledge off the forum the forum suffers.

P. S. THE OPINONS AND VIEWS OF THE BEFORE MENTIONED IDIOT POSTER DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE THOUGHTS AND OPIONONS OF JETBOATERS. NET OR ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON OF ANYSORT. SERIOUSLY A 3RD GRADER COULD HAVE DONE BETTER!

Now we return u to your regularly scheduled drama!

I broke the latch on my old Coleman last year.

Decided Santa should bring us a new one. Now as someone who laughed at spending hundreds on a yeti when my old Coleman worked just fine I was shocked at how flimsy the new ones from Coleman and igloo were.

Still couldn’t bring myself to buy a yeti.

So I bought the Wal-Mart copy. May just paint a mural of cock and balls eating a happy meal on the side of it. Should I make a video?

o_O yes! Yes u should!

To those who do contribute knowledge, I greatly appreciate your efforts. I have been trying to overlook and not contribute to the drama... it has really gotten to be too much. It has kept me from posting. But now, it is worth it to thank those who do help make us a great forum that shares ingenuity and experience(s). You know who you are. THANKS!!!

Can't blame people for being on edge.... I see it's still snowing in places. I am frustrated because our water is still in the low 70s.

So who has done the research for a cooler that fits under the bench seat?
