My understanding is that emissions were primary driver for MR-1 retirement.

Yep. Apparently they could not make them 4 star whatever to meet new emissions regs.
However, I always felt that was not the whole truth and part of the reason for discontinuing the MR-1s was the production cost. Those MR-1HOs are so maxed out they use very high end components and must be very expensive to manufacture.

@Bruce Thank you for straightening me out, so the 210s were non HO in 07 and the 230s had the option of non HO prior to 07, which I did know.

@swatski I do agree, these HO MR-1s are factory high performance racing engines, with a compression nearly 12:1 and and rpms over 10k on a 1.1 liter normally aspirated getting 160 HP. Definitely demands higher end, more expensive components. Sidebar; I remember how much $$ I put into my 83 rabbit GTI when I bumped up performance 30 years ago. Block and head work for the new pistons, cam, valves and springs. Went from 8.5:1 stock compression to 10.5:1 and displacement went to 1.9 l . Larger throttle body ported to the intake manifold and larger intake and exhaust valves etc. had to run 93 or 94 octane and I also put in a Knock sensor ignition/wiring from an 86 golf GTI. Stupid amount of money spent on that car in the 80s. Now I only spend mod money on the boat, and I am happy it is not for the engines.

@Bruce I will need to build a sample excel and share with you to see how physible it is to collect the data.

@BigAbe75 trim tabs will be one the components and i should be able to tell you if the impact is significant or not. If it is then tell you impact ( reduction in range due to trip tabs). Best case scenario I should be able to see the impact by percent deployment. This last one is too granular and I doubt that people remember trim tab % deployed, but I will build it in the excel just in case. Who knows maybe 2018 becomes a laboratory and in 2019 the moment we exit port Everglades and see the wave height and determine the minimum speed needed to arrive safely in Bimini.
Once we have a reliable forecast I can build scenarios and prescriped actions.

Better late than never I guess.....

the link below has the excel file that I was talking about. I put in a separate thread as mine is more Bimini Specific.

Has anyone noticed increased fuel economy after a Lucky 13 cone and/or ribbon delete?
Oh, there is no question the L13 increases the pump efficiency, when properly tuned. Which could boil down to using the best spacer combination - NO impeller repitching or venturi nozzle boring is required unless you are really trying to squeeze every last bit of efficiency/speed.

I have done it all, and the effort IMO is not worth small gains over what you can achieve with the factory setup plus L13, especially in the 190s. Start with 2 or 3 spacers and adjust accordingly - reduce spacers if RPM is low, add spacers if RPM is high - one does not want to be hitting rev limiter at about 7,800.

I've had best results with it using OEM impellers.

How would you ballpark the fuel economy efficiency improvement with L13 vs stock?

@swatski I'm sure you told me already but how much fuel did you burn on the 2017 Bimini crossing?
We made it to Bimini Sands with almost 10gal in the tank (by my used gal gauge) w/no refueling at sea, in little under 5 hours. I think.
Man, was it a fun ride, LOL.;)

Honestly, I could not give a number. I know the pump works more efficiently with properly tuned L13s as there is less cavitation/ventilation - generally associated with efficiency. Moreover, when running on one engine only - there is less cavitation with the L13 and the boat will actually plane and run way faster - and that is a pretty tough test. I think posted some data, but none of it is even semi-quantitative, more just a feel and general experience.
It is also possible to overdo it with those L13s - for example with too many spacers (=larger cone volume) or too small diameter venturi nozzle opening the L13 may act a bit like a torque converter - due to pressure built up.

We ran out of gas during our last crossing in a 2016 242X. We always take extra, and fueled up just outside Bimini Cove (so as not to run out while entering the harbor). This was a rough crossing .... the roughest we crossed in, which is why we used so much gas, and why we always take extra cans.

I’m sorry but is that graph showing over 190 miles out of a 242. I’ve never gotten over 2.5 mpg. On vacation I get .9. Lol.

That first graph has 2 purple lines. I suspect you're looking at the line for SX230.
