Yeah, @swatski the angle of the picture @JCampbell posted doesn't show the damage well, but here's one I kept from back then. It's clear it's not the bolt drop issue.

Now I checked 3 times to be sure that the post explaining the dealer's name and all the other sorted details of how this all happened etc and I can not see it anymore , so I assume it was deleted however if you ever go back in time to when I made and sold the old stainless fins, there is a lot of information to show what a set of those fins looked like if they struck a solid object, I also went back in time to locate a few pictures of a set of those that were damaged and repaired by me for the customer back on 03 26 09 and I will say that even with considerable contact damage the nozzles were not harmed because the fins were made to bend on contact, also the person who ran the logs over intentionally was tim1966 on that board, here is what he said about those old style fins.

How many times can fins be bent back into shape? These things are almost bullet proof, I would have broke my lower unit off my I/O 3 or 4 times by now.

I recall repairing his fins bent from running over the tree by simply using some large duck billed vice grips and doing it right on the boat in about 60 seconds.

Now pictures of before and after on the Hillard fins first pic shows how they looked when I received them, next is how I repaired them by cutting out the cross bar then pressing them flat again using a 20 ton press after that I weld in a new bar clean it up and return it with new hardware. I still have those bars available by the way if any one ever needs to repair the old style fins. looking at the last picture was how they looked after being repaired,.
Now once again I make my parts to be sacrificial always have. But people mess up and things happen.
The new systems are also sacrificial with brackets built in to bend in the event of an impact on the mag a k steering.
And here is a quick video showing the fin moving and the bracket allowing it to do so with no harm to the nozzle or pump or fin for that matter .

The systems with springs allow the fins to flip up on impact and then come back down.
Vipers are also sacrificial and even with a couple mishaps doing heavy damage to the steering unit " that I cover under my repair or replace warranty" I have not had any damage to the nozzles from impacts to stone walls or tree stumps , could it happen yes but it can also happen with no steering added if you try hard enough.
Now since telling people they needed thread locking compound if their install used the bottom nozzle bolt plus advising them to follow the instructions on the package regarding curing time because that is very important. I finally found a way to include the thread locking compound with the parts that the post office was happy with.
I did notice since then everything has been just fine " knock on wood" although doing the install at the boat ramp and going out before the thread locking compound has had time to cure was another issue so I came up with the super glue on the top of the bolt and this also is an indicator that can be easily monitored just by looking in the end of the nozzle.

Next ask yourself , what do I want out of a steering system? Just slow speed or reverse handling improvements, any system can do that so it's not a big deal.
Do you want steering assistance at all speeds and while cruising without all the constant input in the helm, do you want instant response to the helm at all speeds and do you want to be able to continue steering even when you are decelerating and turning at the same time or when the conditions turn bad a you need to keep control of the boat in wind and waves.
Maybe you want to be able to decide the exact amount of influence your system provides or you want other upgrades like more reverse thrust more stopping power less high speed bleed off during turns or the ability to make considerably tighter turns on plane.
So I do make a variety of systems and upgrades for most of those systems.

Do this test with your current system go as fast as you like on plane, start making a turn, now imagine there is an obstruction in the water like a big log or a person in a boat or swimmer.
Now go into emergency collision avoidance mode, pull the throttles back to avoid that imaginary obstruction while turning the steering wheel as fast and as hard as you can.
See if your boat went where you wanted it to go or did you loose control and it went wherever it wanted to.
If that is the case what if that was a real situation ? Would you feel safe with those results for your family , your self or your boat not to mention any one else in the way. Just go try that the next time you are out on the water. But be sure you are away from any real obstructions or other people etc before you do.

I always said to my trainees that they needed to remember people judge you using themselves as the base line.
Simply put when they say something like I don't believe you don't drink or you don't do drugs or you don't steal it tells you a lot about THEM!
I think he just did more harm to himself than any one else could do and I doubt he really gets it. Sadly.
Now as for his tampering with products I actually gave him permission after the fact even though he just doesn't get it.
He attacked me once before in the cesspool thread also.
I understand his need to tinker with things and how he likes to show these things off .
I did the same thing all my life I just didn't have the training or the formal education so I taught myself by hanging out at the body shops to learn that trade or the welding shops to learn that and the marine repair shops to learn that, etc.
So even though I raised a family on a very small L E O income.
I used my skills to work on cars boats and welded for extra money .
I always got the job done and always had the things I needed and my 4 children needed plus more.
I thanked the power above for my gifts and still do.
I thought I had it bad because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.
After spending 23 years dealing with the bad side of humanity I admit it did make me a bit caulis and outspoken, I know I have no fear just look at some of the stunts I do on skies at my age, but I have always been that way. So whatever. I'm actually sitting here laughing out loud. Sorry.

OMG this is hilarious! I don't delete posts, your buddy does and I've caught him at it twice.
