I was not planning on posting to this thread for a little longer but here is what is currently happening in The SF Bay Area which has been under a shelter in place order since March 17th, the longest in the county, or close to it (sarcastically) so far, a whole week now.

Pic from one of the local costcos

I know someone who got a ticket for violating the order, which was walking through a park at the wrong time (too many others were to). It’s an expensive walk. The Governor just decided to help us out by closing all state parks and parking lots.

My coworker tested positive. He sits at the desk behind me and I last saw him Monday last week. Since then i've been working at home and i'm only having allergy symptoms. Maybe i'm okay 🤷‍♂️ He is part of the hasidic jewish community, that i've said before, is particularly hard hit for not following social distancing rules.

Edit: Just remembered I was using his computer when windows pushed a big update to my computer.

This latest apacoplyse virus will certainly bring some families sorrow and my heart truly goes out to them. It does seem, however, that our current response is out of proportion when we compare this with how many people are annually affected and even die annually from other strains according to reliable medical sources. Fear sells. It grants additional power to some because it causes people to willingly give up freedoms. They say, never let a crisis go to waste.
Have a coworker with the same mentality. I put together some numbers out of curiosity of how bad it really might be.

Lets say 70% of us will get infected at some point, and of those 70%, 20% will get seriously ill.......That's a 1.4 in 10 chance you'll have serious medical problems from exposure. I liken this to a serious car accident. It'll come on fast, won't be expected, and will be extremely life threatening. Might live, might not.

here are a few other statistics I dug up from relatively reputable sources (NY Times articles, various research papers, etc)

Coronovirus = 14/100
Cancer = 14/100
Heart Disease = 16/100
Suicide = 1.1/100
Car accident = 0.93/100
Motorcycle Accident = 0.16/100

This shows the pandemic currently is estimated (we really don't have great numbers at this point) to be as deadly as cancer. how many people do you know that have been affected by cancer? How many do you think you'll know in a year that will be affected by coronavirus? Sure seems to me that small changes in habit and routines are a worthwhile effort. Dismissing this as an out of proportion reaction is short sighted at best, and deadly at worst IMO.

At the very least, even if you aren't helping yourself, you're being a good citizen.

I see your point and agree @2kwik4u , but you can't catch cancer from another person or a countertop. There's a fine line between dismissing it and overreacting. I agree, small changes in habit and routines are a worthwhile effort and should be required. I think big changes would be justified! But no TP, dry pasta or Kleenex? Fear does sell and makes people do stupid things. MSM is highly to blame. Last night NBC news New York led with the nightly body count and how many more people have tested positive (no mention of negatives) and which celebs have been tested, followed by a story explaining "How the Coronavirus Destroys Your Lungs." Really!? I switched to Fox news (quickly) to see stories about distilleries switching over to making hand sanitizer, medications that are WORKING, equipment donations being made by corporations and interviews with 2 people who survived after hospital stays with treatment.
The out of proportion reaction is the disgusting hoarding behavior fueled by the MSM's portrayal of it as The Plague! OUR current response is out of proportion. No, we don't social distance every Flu season (for alot of reasons), but we don't hoard food and toilet paper either! Gov. Cuomo has been the only one who has been saying to calm the f#%ck down.

I'd take Coumo and Fauci briefings all day. Factual and sincere.

Yeah, he's on now 👍
NYC is looking to take over hotels for sick bed space and calling up retired health care workers.

Gov Cuomo isn't the only one. You should watch an Andy Beshear update from KY. That dude has quite the calming effect while presenting facts and clear direction. Pretty much every official has been saying to calm down and stop the panic. Most still don't listen.

Media might have some say in the panic levels, but I don't think it's the only reason people are acting this way. The conspiracy theories of MSM generating fear to sell products, is, well.......absurd IMO. The coordination required to make that many news outlets report the same bad news is off the charts, and I'm fairly certain the Toilet Paper Manufacturer Consortium doesn't have that deep of pockets. My take is that the hoarding we are seeing is just human response to the premise of having to be locked in the house for weeks on end, and having both no experience with it in the past, or no real understanding of how to plan for it. So like many other things in America, the response is over prepare, with a dash of "we'll use it eventually anyway".

This isn't MSM driven, this is driven by poor citizenship in general. The "I'll get mine regardless of what my fellow citizen needs" is completely rampant. it's the same reason socialized healthcare can't get a start. "How dare I pay to help someone other than myself". This isn't even political, it's basic understanding of how to be a good neighbor on a national scale.

It looks like the social distancing is helping based on the exponential transmission we should have been into the millions by now . By the time this is over I would be curios to see if competes with the drug OD problem and opioid epidemic that has killed 750,000 in the US . Opioids killed Nearly 47,000 in 2018

from the CDC

More than 750,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose.1 Two out of three drug overdose deaths in 2018 involved an opioid.2 Opioids are substances that work in the nervous system of the body or in specific receptors in the brain to reduce the intensity of pain. Overdose deaths involving opioids, including prescription opioids, heroin, and synthetic opioids (like fentanyl), have increased almost six times since 1999.1 Overdoses involving opioids killed nearly 47,000 people in 2018, and 32% of those deaths involved prescription opioids.2

I don't know what MSM you guys are watching, but all the news I'm watching is factual, straight forward and to the point. I'm dismayed by the constant attacks and blaming of the MSM for stupid human behavior. I fear this is simply a learned behavior that will need to be "unlearned" over time. I watch ABC World News, BBC World News, and Local Fox News. None are doing anything bad other than reporting the facts.

These are strange days indeed. And still no coordinate plan/directions/rules from the Feds. Each State continues to do their own thing.....laughable if it weren't so serious.

medications that are WORKING,
Please share which medications are working with some data to prove your statement. We all could benefit from such info.

Keeping it all here @haknslash :)

@jryan I copied this picture. IMO, these are families doing their part. Appears boats are more than 10' apart. 2 people walking the beach and everyone keeping their distance. Just because there are a lot of boats does not mean social distancing is not being followed. Keep in mind "most" boats are 8.5" wide.

Couldn't agree more...I was out all weekend in the area and honestly didn't see any boats that close together. Even folks we came across kept their distance. Small groups (families) and well spaced. Needless to say I'm bummed...I WFH and getting out on the water is my dose of sanity.

I thought we weren't supposed to get political on this forum, or does this only apply to members and not admins?

edited to remove possible political topics,

I wish we cared as much about the 11k people killed each and every year by impaired drivers, costing 44B, not even thinking of those who are injured and have their lives changed forever, Impaired Driving: Get the Facts | Motor Vehicle Safety | CDC Injury Center

for some reason I just seem to care less and less, why won't @Betik answer his door when I come by to visit ??

This is what makes the uncoordinated state by state approach not work. I can GUARANTEE that there are plenty of boats out there with extended family and friends on board. I get that going out with just one's family should be fine. But how do we police this? The "shelter at home" order is really the only way to best ensure we are all not mingling and passing this shit on. Until then.....its "party on" in some places, while others are hunkered down.....pointless that some are isolating while others are not.

My dad wanted to get out of the house and get some exercise so he drove his boat to peanut island in west palm beach. He said that there was parties, people hanging out, and violating the social distancing. The Florida governor did too little too late. Let's hope that this doesn't start spreading through the majority florida population: Aging with pre-existing conditions.

Here in the west we value our personal freedoms, but at this time, at what cost? There isn't a sense of collective good in the USA. "its everyones responsibility to not get sick. If you get sick, maybe you weren't working hard enough."

I spoke to my friend in bogota, colombia and she says that there is a shelter in place order. They are writing tickets to people that ignore the rules. Seems to be working in keeping people at home.
