Bruce, What happened to the Plasma donations I was doing during the winter, I was under the impression that was quite helpful but I dont hear anything about it now. Its surprising we still dont have solid treatments protocols for this. The Vax was made in a year but solid treatments not so much
Viruses to hard to treat. We have a lot of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections so typically they can be cleared up quickly. @swatski has a much greater understanding of this but viruses are so similar to our own cells and so infectious that it is hard to kill them without killing our own cells. On the very positive side vaccination is possible for SARS-CoV-2. For some viruses like HIV vaccination is near if not impossible.
There were numerous studies of donor and monoclonal antibodies. Attempts to treat progressed patients with donor antibodies typically failed. I do have a friend who is an extremely fit male nurse in his 50s who believes he was saved by a matched antibody donor dosing after being put on oxygen. Unfortunately he has continued to have long CoVID symptoms. The monoclonal antibodies were identified among patient antibodies then produced in labs. Since they are lab produced they can be concentrated and delivered in large volume.
Thank you for donating. I have no doubt that recipients are better for your sacrifice. Do you know if your donations were used in a study? If so I may be able to find that publication for you.
I do believe that hospital doctors have become better at knowing what to do when. @tabbibus likely can provide info on that. My perspective from the data is that doctors are doing a much better job of keeping patients alive. Of course delta is making that a more difficult challenge.
