@drewkaree, Those were the days!

Y'know, it wasn't until very recently that I heard the lyrics as "gee, our old LaSalle ran great". I always thought it was "G-R-O", and I never pieced together the fact that it was in any way tied to the car, even though my dad OWNED a LaSalle 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

It never made sense, and I never gave it a second thought

I read that they changed the lyrics at times so that section is different.

More and more frequently I find myself at places of commerce that claim they only take credit, no cash. When I am in the mood, I pull a dollar bill out of my wallet and show the cashier where it says, “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.” Sometimes they get the point, usually they don’t. Then I ask them if the word “ALL” is unclear. If I still get a blank stare, I ask them if it says “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE - EXCEPT THE FISERV FORUM IN MILWAUKEE?”

Then I pay with credit.

I suggest others do the same occasionally.

One might think so, but on the FederalReserve website it notes, Is it legal for a business in the United States to refuse cash as a form of payment?,

“There is no federal statute mandating that a private business, a person, or an organization must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law that says otherwise.”

Personally, I have a rewards credit card that I use for almost all our purchases.

Absence of a federal law prohibiting some specific behavior does not make that behavior legal. There are thousands of examples of case law that require or prohibit behavior without a federal statute behind it.

The Fed is a quasi-private corporation. It is chartered by various US statutes to act as the Central Bank for the United States federal government. It is not part of the US government. Interesting reference, but I would not rely them on legal advice.

I do not think the concept (legality of only cashless payments accepted) has been tested in federal courts, but several national retailers have tried it and then backed down after public blowback.

From my perspective, it would be fairly easy to meet the hurdle to show this behavior could be “potentially discriminatory” given that credit cards and other cashless payments are not equally available to all Americans (subject to potentially discriminatory means testing and other filtering that clearly could be bounced against all sorts of statutory or case-law-determined protections for various classes and/or categories of people.)

However, I mainly like to have ability to pay with cash should I want to. Usually, credit is fine for me. But not always.
