Has anyone used a screw type clean out plug for sewer lines instead of buying new Yamaha clean out plugs? Before I buy new ones was just looking at all options. Thanks

No.

Why do you need news ones? If it is because of them sticking, just buy the rebuild kit. If they were stolen, you'll want OEM replacements or you'll have leaks and turbulence that will foul up your drive.

I broke them in half getting them out of the boat.

post pictures of the broken plugs also do not even try to do that, the bottom of your clean out plugs is the bottom of your boat some people have used 5200 to permanently glue in the plugs so they can use the boat

That sounds like a super sketchy idea. Usually, I'm all about trying to save cash wherever I can, but the forces applied to said pipe in the application you're mentioning is, IMO, going to be beyond what the pipe is rated for, not to mention all the other things everyone has mentioned already. I may be incorrect on that, depending on how the forces would be applied, but I'm willing to bet if things get sideways, you'll end up looking at that $50 rebuild kit as a steal in hindsight.

Using sewer line plugs sounds like a pretty shitty fix to me :):):):)

we still need detailed pictures to see if he can save the plugs or not, he may be ok , as I said the bottom of the plug forms the bottom surface of the hull using the reverse move he can get by without the plugs ability to be removed in most cases but the ball is in his court.

Hey, I don't blame you for trying to look for alternative options. I think the fear is that the pressure in that spot can be pretty great and a blown plug at speed can cause some damage.

Also the lower shape of the plug is contoured to the tunnel, so using a different plug with a flat bottom is sure to have some impact on speed and propulsion.

Because of these reasons it really looks and feels like a no go, hence the resistance of the board to this idea. If you post some good pictures of the plugs as requested you might find it only takes $50 to rebuild them.

I saw the other thread where you were trying to get them extracted, so I am not optimistic about the rebuild potential, but posting pictures is cheap. Let everyone check them out...

That said, I will join the rest of them: if these plugs really are done-for, you will want OEM replacements. This would not be where I would improvise a solution. The cavitation alone from not getting the right shape on the bottom will nix that. Boat may not even move (best case) or, as mentioned, could damage the impellers. Plus what all the other folks said above. Sorry; wish we had better news for you.

I was able to rebuild them. Sorry for no response or pictures. I am having trouble now with the port. It seems to be really corroded and plugs not latching. Any idea on what product to use to get corrosion out of port?

Can you tell what type of corrosion it is? Like salt accumulation? Or something eating at the metal?

That having been asked, I would probably just rebuild the port one, too. If the one needed it, the other one does too (or will soon)...

Both sides. It is salt accumulation. Was wondering if there was an easier way to clean. Read dishwasher liquid and SOS pad. Also read lime away.

Are you hitting it regularly with the Salt Away when flushing? That would seem the best to me. But, I also don't boat in salt water, so someone who is in salt may have better advice. I do know that Lime Away is acid gel and is effective on calcium/magnesium deposits. Not sure its effectiveness on salt.

I rebuilt both. It is the hole that they go in that seems to be the problem with corrosion. Might not have stated that correctly

No but that’s a good idea. I only run the boat now on a freshwater lake. Previous owner had the boat in Orange Beach.
