Hopefully never an issue but if you leave the throttle lever in forward I think there is even less of a chance of water ingestion at low speeds, as the water can exit the back of the pump, vs build additional pressure with the reverse gate down.
First trip out this year, I got a rock stuck in my starboard impeller and ran back to the ramp (4-5 miles) on my port engine only. I believe I left the nozzle in neutral, but luckily didn’t take on any water. Cylinders were bone dry. I got lucky, I didn’t have any clamps with me.

Low speed is definitely not a problem, and @Zeusmotorworks already confessed to doing 10 MPH with trolling motor with no ill effects. I think as you go over that and get closer to planning is when it can really become a problem.

Is this to prevent water flow through the engine when towing? Still a newbie waiting on my boat so please forgive the dumb question.

This is to prevent water from entering your engine through an open exhaust valve…. If you stay below 5 mph this is not an issue.
