This is where I grew up. 9 houses from the lake. We were actually too close to get snow. If you went 2 miles inland, all hell broke loose. Funny thing, when water spouts would pop up, we would have minnows in our front yard.

Water Spouts?!?! I googled. Looks like a fancy word for "Lake Tornado"......I'm guessing they were less destructive?!?!

They can do some damage pretty quickly. Here is one from Ft Myers Beach recently. I can't find the right video but one has a shot of the tornado sucking up umbrellas and sending them into the air at crazy speed.

That’s exactly it. Think of the”sister” tornados in the movie Twister on the water. They very rarely ever turn into anything on land and usually dissipate close to land. If you are on the water, obviously steer clear.

Holy crap that's a lot of snow.

I'm in Silver Creek, NY this week. Drove up yesterday and had my first encounter with lake effect snow. Was running 70-75mph on I-90 right until the NY state line. Then about 10mi over the line, I dropped to 30mph, flashers on and full white out conditions. Was that way the remaining 15-ish miles into Silver Creek. Apparently this is just "Tuesday" to these folks up here. Seems absurd to me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Like......How is this "normal". Clearly I have some adjusting to do.

Locate the least expensive set of rims for your vehicles that you can find, and buy a set of Blizzak snow tires for them. Install them after the first snow fall if it'll be less than 2",or before the first snow if it'll be more than that. Leave them on until March. Replace them after the 2nd winter, or if you can make it through 3 winters. They'll likely need to be replaced after the 3rd.

Don't screw around with "all season" tires if you don't have 4WD. NEVER leave the house without an emergency kit in the car, and a jump pack, if possible.

You'll really come to appreciate the kindness of your neighbors who find out you're a transplant

My friend put these tires on his Tundra and has reported excellent traction with them on ice.

Watch the movie New In Town for a good primer on mid west winters lol!

Haven't had but two 2wd vehicle since we traded away our RX8 back in '11. Nothing but AWD/4WD vehicles in the house in the last 5+yrs.

I've had good luck at home with Continental DWS tires on my Audis. Drove through snow over the grill emblem in my A4 with those tires. No idea if those will still hold up/be good enough for this level of snow up here. I do like the idea of getting a nice set of summer wheels/tires for the car, and then throwing a set of winter tires on the wheels I have now, though.

Speaking of which I'm still up here now, and driving the Q7 with the same tires at about 50% tread remaining. Aside from the Q being pretty heavy and wanting to push through turns it feels pretty sure footed. Have about 6in on the ground this morning and didn't have any issues......With that said, I'm on day 9 up here, and day 3 in the snow, so I'm sure I haven't seen it "bad' yet.

Here's the morning commute. This street was dry when I came in at 9pm last night.

I have created an emergency kit for the car though. 6 pack of water bottles, box of granola bars, jump pack, and my "cold weather gear" (coveralls, boots, face covering, gloves) in a small duffle in the back. Just in case I get stranded somewhere. Been doing that for years anyway, even in our previous southern location.

My father in law had a 3 series BMW years back when we all lived in Cleveland. He would keep a cheap set of steely wheels with some aggressive snow tires for the winter and then switch back to the factory wheels/tires in the spring.

When you get down to 30% tread, winter becomes more of a challenge. So you replace your tires earlier than necessary, or you accept that one winter in every three or four comes with risk. If you get spare rims and real snow tires, you’ll be amazed at the difference AND you’ll get an extra couple of summers out of your performance tires.

Double the recommendation for dedicated snow tires/wheels. When I lived in Rochester NY, this made all the difference in the world.

Ok, this is it..... I've officially found the twilight zone. There's a freaking seagull in the snow up here. What the hell have I signed up for?!? Soo weird!

Ill second the hot stove…. Its been zero or degrees below for a couple of weeks. I’ve had a fire going pretty much non stop for a couple of weeks. My stove does about 95% of my heating. Love getting the fire hot again in the morning with coffee. Looks like there is a good warm up coming for the next 10 days or so.
