Horrible phone service, so these had to wait until today. Sturgeon drinking season started Saturday. 3 neighbors had tags, and the guy who got one is in the pic where it's sitting on the bar. 15 years, and finally success this year. The pic with 6 of them is from one of the many bars that were visited. They're on a pool table, so you can get an idea of the size of some of these. My neighbor's was a little over 3', and the biggest one you see in those pics is 71"...and the guys were happy to help out that young lady who was daring enough to do a shot through a sturgeon!

I assume they are good eating? Never had it.....

Poygan. Lottery over by us for a tag, so you might wait a bit longer. Makes it a lot more of a party atmosphere after registration cutoff. After about 1 pm, it's assholes to elbows at any bar surrounding the lake.

I've only ever had it smoked, and it's decent, but if you get yourself a female, the roe (eggs) are what you would know as caviar, which is supposedly good eating. Never had caviar in all my life, but I've heard it's awesome. Pickled herring is more my style, so I have no idea where that would put me on the caviar enjoyment scale, but it's spendy enough that I'm only ever going to have it if one of my neighbors lands a female with eggs.

Closest I ever came to one is when we were at a tie up and one was making the rounds scaring the crap out of people when it'd rub up against you. It's kinda freaky when it happens, but they're no danger, other than size-wise possibly knocking you over.

So that's the "good luck charm" for sturgeon season, and NOBODY was eating it - we have a neighborhood breakfast get-together on opening day every year. I dove in, and had darn near all of it. My neice was grossed out about the herring, and moreso when we headed back to our place, when I pointed out the huge old glass jars that used to hold pickled herring - easily a 10lb jar. I've got 10-15 from ages ago when they used to sell it in those amounts around here. It's been a "delicacy" my whole life.

So the neice who was grossed out about the herring? Yeah, that's her, several hours and a dozen or so drinks in, taking a shot out of the sturgeon's mouth! ? ?
